Location: Gothenburg, Sweden
Minimum Education Level: Master's student, Ph.D. student, postdoc
Focus: This year's edition has a topical focus on language
acquisition. We will discuss questions like: How can structured
linguistic knowledge emerge during learning from naturalistic input?
What principles govern the representation of this structured
linguistic knowledge in neural systems? How do these principles enable
compositionality and other forms of generalisation in language? And,
in answering these questions, can we move from empirical
demonstrations with neural networks toward mathematical principles of
language acquisition?
Description:
Analytical Connectionism is a 2-week summer course on analytical
tools, including methods from statistical physics and probability
theory, for probing neural networks and higher-level cognition. The
course brings together neuroscience, psychology and machine-learning
communities, and introduces attendees to analytical methods for neural
network analysis and connectionist theories of higher-level cognition
and psychology.
Connectionism, a key theoretical approach in psychology, uses neural
network models to simulate a wide range of phenomena, including
perception, memory, decision-making, language, and cognitive control.
However, most connectionist models remain, to a certain extent, black
boxes, and we lack a mathematical understanding of their behaviours.
Recent progress in theoretical neuroscience and machine learning has
provided novel analytical tools that have advanced our mathematical
understanding of deep neural networks, and have the potential to help
make these “black boxes” more transparent.
Tuition: 2 000 SEK
Tuition Explanation: There is a course registration fee of 2 000 SEK.
Attendees are expected to cover their own travel, accommodation and
other subsistence expenses. Lunch and coffee/tea breaks will be
provided on course days, and there will be one school dinner.
Financial Aid Applications accepted until 01-May-2026
A small number of travel grants may become available to support
successful candidates who find it difficult to attend the School for
financial reasons.
Financial Aid Instructions:
To be considered, please complete all questions in the "Financial
assistance application" section of the application form. You will be
