The translation of sacred texts has long been recognized as one of the
most complex and intellectually demanding areas of translation
studies. Unlike other forms of translation, translating sacred
scriptures involves much more than finding linguistic equivalents. It
requires preserving the meaning, style, and spiritual essence of the
source text while making it accessible to readers from diverse
linguistic, cultural, and religious backgrounds.
Every translational decision has implications for how sacred texts are
understood, interpreted, and received. Among the world's sacred
scriptures, the Qur'an presents distinctive challenges due to its
linguistic richness, rhetorical inimitability, theological
significance, and status as the divine revelation in Arabic.
Translators must negotiate complex linguistic, theological, cultural,
historical, and hermeneutical dimensions while remaining faithful to
the integrity of the original text. Similar challenges arise in
translating other sacred texts, including the Bible, the Torah, and
other religious scriptures, making sacred text translation an
important interdisciplinary field of inquiry.
This conference aims to provide an international platform for scholars
and practitioners to explore contemporary issues, theoretical
developments, and practical approaches in the translation of sacred
texts, with particular emphasis on the translation of the Qur'an.
