Subject: In Memoriam: Professor Svetlana Kurteš
It is with great sadness that we announce that Professor Svetlana
Kurteš passed away on 13 March 2026.
Svetlana was a UK-based scholar whose work in linguistic and
intercultural education spanned almost three decades. She held
academic positions at universities in Europe, Asia and the Middle East
and was most recently affiliated with the University of Madeira. Her
international academic experience was reflected in her research, which
brought together communication, culture and society, with particular
attention to their relevance for education. Throughout her career,
Svetlana was a strong supporter of intercultural education and of
teaching and research aimed at promoting dialogue and understanding
across cultures. By organising conferences, panels and roundtables, at
which she also presented her own work, and by co-editing volumes and
special issues, she helped bring together scholars from different
countries and disciplines and created opportunities for academic
exchange and collaboration. Since 2010, she had served as
Vice-President of the ENIEDA Network, where she coordinated and
supported many of its activities. She also served as Book Review
Editor of Lodz Papers in Pragmatics, published by De Gruyter Brill,
and was a valued and dependable member of the journal’s editorial
team. She was also a dedicated and inspiring lecturer who cared deeply
about her students, always ready to listen, advise and help when
needed.
Svetlana will be remembered not only for her academic work and
commitment to intercultural education, but also as a warm, generous
and wonderful person. She brought people and ideas together, she cared
deeply, and she had a rare gift for making people feel seen, valued
and welcome. Her passing is a great loss to her friends, colleagues
and collaborators. Those who knew and worked with her will remember
her with affection and gratitude.
