Experimental SLA: Connecting Research, Theory, and Language Teaching
(ExpSLA) is an in-person conference designed to foster exchange among
theorists, SLA researchers, language educators, and early-career
scholars. Its aim is to strengthen methodological literacy, encourage
interdisciplinary collaboration, and promote the integration of
experimental findings into both theoretical models and language
teaching practice.
Over the last three decades, empirical research in Second Language
Acquisition (SLA) has expanded considerably, accompanied by the
development of an increasingly diverse range of experimental methods.
Traditional tasks, such as grammaticality judgment, acceptability
judgment, truth-value judgment, and sentence comprehension tasks,
continue to play a central role in the field. At the same time,
advances in digital technologies have broadened methodological
possibilities through platforms and software such as E-Prime, Gorilla,
and crowdsourcing environments like Mechanical Turk. More recently,
researchers have incorporated online processing measures and
neurocognitive techniques, further enriching the methodological
toolkit available for investigating second language development.
ExpSLA explores experimental SLA as a key interface between linguistic
theory, empirical research, and language teaching. The conference is
grounded in the view that the relationship between theory and data is
reciprocal: theoretical frameworks guide the design of experiments and
the formulation of hypotheses, while empirical findings contribute to
the refinement, validation, and sometimes revision of theoretical
accounts of language. By foregrounding experimental methodologies,
ExpSLA seeks to highlight how rigorous empirical inquiry advances our
understanding of language acquisition and how these insights can
inform evidence-based language teaching practices.
As a forum bringing together scholars and practitioners from diverse
perspectives, ExpSLA provides opportunities to examine emerging
methodologies, discuss theoretical implications of empirical findings,
and reflect on the pedagogical applications of experimental research.
In doing so, the conference aims to strengthen dialogue across
disciplinary boundaries and promote a more integrated approach to SLA
scholarship and language education.
Researchers, educators, and graduate students are invited to submit
abstracts presenting original research related to the topic of the
conference. We particularly welcome contributions that explore the
dynamic connections among empirical investigation, linguistic theory,
and language teaching practice. Abstract submissions are due by
September 25, 2026, and should comply with the following submission
guidelines:
- Abstracts should be written in English or French and not exceed two
pages (A4), in 12-point font, single line spacing and 2.5cm margins,
including examples, figures and references.
- Abstracts should be anonymous.
- Submissions are limited to a maximum of one individual and one
joint abstract, or two joint abstracts per author.
- Each paper accepted for presentation will be allotted 20 minutes
plus 10 minutes for discussion
- Authors are asked to submit their anonymous abstracts as a PDF file
to the following site:
https://easyabs.linguistlist.org/conference/ExpSLA/
- If you do not have an account, please follow the instructions
provided by the platform and create one.
