The National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (NSSHL) is an
intellectual forum for the discussion and advancement of education and
research around Spanish heritage bilingualism in the United States.
The 14th NSSHL will be held from Thursday, February 18, to Saturday,
February 20, 2027, at the University of California, Davis. It will
take place in person and follow the regular format of keynotes, paper
presentations, poster presentations, and workshops to allow attendees
to share ideas and knowledge about the different aspects of Spanish
heritage language teaching, practices, and research.
Held in California for the first time, the symposium brings together
researchers and K-16 educators from across the country. Our goal is to
connect scholarship and practice, to dismantle misconceptions about
heritage languages and bilingualism, and to positively impact
speakers’ lived experiences.
This year's theme is From awareness to action: Classroom to community
pathways. With this in mind, we aim to foster collaboration among
scholars, educators, and community stakeholders, co-developing
culturally responsive resources and identifying research pathways that
directly inform classroom practice, public discourse, and community
needs.
We invite abstract submissions from now until October 4th, 2026.
Acceptance notifications will be sent by October 25th, 2026.
