Linguistic Field(s): Pragmatics

Submission Deadline: 15-Oct-2026

This is a panel at the 20th International Pragmatics Conference
(IPrA20).
In this panel we focus on conflict as an interactional-pragmatic
phenomenon. It aims to explore how speakers signal, negotiate, and
contest meaning, focusing on the dynamic interplay between
communicative practices and the contextual features of conflict. These
may include the nature of the dispute, the medium of interaction,
participants’ roles and relationships, and social or institutional
stakes.
Bringing together scholars working in different areas of pragmatics,
this panel aims to illuminate how pragmatic communicative strategies
function to generate and repair cases of language conflict, as well as
the interpretive frames through which language in conflict can be
theorised. Papers will explore the linguistic and interactional
resources through which meanings, understandings, and positions are
expressed and resisted, whether overtly or implicitly, and how these
choices influence the trajectory and interpretation of conflict.
The panel invites contributions that combine theoretical insight with
empirical analysis, drawing on diverse types of interactional data
from everyday talk to institutional exchanges, to reveal how conflict
is managed, mitigated and/or intensified through linguistic practice.
Papers may address topics including but not limited to the following:
 - Conversational interaction in conflict
 - Non-cooperative communication
 - Interpersonal conflict
 - Disagreements and decision making
 - Normative commitment and conflict
 - Contested concepts (and conceptual engineering)
 - Metapragmatic talk in conflict
 - Resolving conflict through language
