Subject: Merlin’s Leipzig Gloss Tool 2.0: An Online Tool for Creating Editable Interlinear Glossed Text


I am pleased to announce the release of Merlin’s Leipzig Gloss Tool
2.0, an online research tool designed to assist linguists, language
teachers, and students in preparing editable interlinear glossed text
(IGT).
The tool can generate and align multiple annotation layers, including:
- the original text;
- a primary transcription or romanization;
- IPA or another secondary annotation;
- English Leipzig-style glosses;
- token-aligned Chinese glosses;
- free English translations; and
- free Chinese translations.
Version 2.0 provides dedicated profiles for Mandarin Chinese,
Cantonese, Southern Min, Japanese, German, French, Spanish, Dutch,
Sanskrit, Uyghur, Mongolian, and Tibetan. A custom-language profile is
also available, with support for both left-to-right and right-to-left
source scripts.
Users can enter multiple examples manually or import a TXT file. All
generated forms, transcriptions, glosses, and translations remain
fully editable. Output lines can be selected and freely reordered. The
tool also provides customizable typography, flexible example
numbering, project saving and reopening, and export to Word-compatible
tables, HTML/Markdown, SVG, and transparent PNG.
The tool uses AI services selected by the user, currently including
DeepSeek, OpenAI, Claude/Anthropic, and OpenRouter. Users supply their
own API key, and provider charges may apply. Validated keys are
retained only as authenticated encrypted browser cookies and are not
written into project files or browser local storage.
The software is intended as a research assistant rather than a
substitute for linguistic analysis. Automatically generated
segmentation, transcription, morphological analysis, glosses, and
translations should always be reviewed and corrected by a qualified
researcher or speaker.
