(IPrA20).
Panel: The Sociopragmatics of Mediated and Digital Stylization
Convenors: Jan Chovanec (Brno) and Christian Ilbury (Edinburgh)
In their everyday communication, individuals adopt various social
styles and enact a range of identities, both matter-of-factly and
strategically (Coupland 2007, Bucholtz and Hall 2005). Such discursive
performance of identity is realized via stylization, i.e., the
speakers’ conscious and intentional use of linguistic resources that
reflect their concern for selfpresentation (Goffman 1981). This can
take the form of a speaker performing a highly stylized persona or
doing ‘being ordinary’ in order to maintain a para-social relation
with their audiences or express a range of other indexicalities and
social meanings (Agha 2007, Rampton 2009).
In this panel, we are interested in two complementary issues related
to identity performance and discursive stylization in mediated and
digital contexts: not only the communicative practices that underlie
such acts of identity display but also their perception by recipients
in terms of the assumed ‘authenticity’ of such acts. We wish to
explore, among other things, what forms of discursive authentication
are used to legitimize one’s identity performance, as well as how such
performance is seen as (un)successful in relation to the speaker’s
‘authentic’ self.
The papers will draw on spoken, written, as well as multimodal data
from various mediated and digital genres (TV broadcasts, social media,
video platforms, etc.). They will address the strategic use of diverse
linguistic devices (phonological, lexical, and semiotic) and
discursive strategies (style shifting, double-voicing, crossing, etc.)
that are involved in identity construction and performance, and
ultimately in identity perception by recipients. Methodologically, the
papers will draw on sociopragmatics and digital discourse analysis.
They will include case studies as well as theoretical discussions of
issues related to identityrelated stylization from sociopragmatic and
metapragmatic perspectives.
The presentations will address some of the following questions:
- How are stylized identity constructions discursively constructed,
authenticated, evaluated, undermined, deconstructed, imitated or
challenged?
- How does stylization intersect with the perception of authenticity,
ordinariness, expertise, authority, and trustworthiness?
- What effects do stylized performed identities have on recipients and
what reactions do they generate?
- How are performances of stylized identities subsequently
recontextualized, re-entextualized and resemiotized, e.g. through
mocking, ridicule and reuse for humorous or critical purposes?
- How is interlocutors’ metapragmatic awareness manifested in their
verbal reactions, emotive stances, and other forms of discursive
practice that reflect on the salient features of stylized personas?
