To see translation at sea is to see Brest, at the tip of Brittany: the
ways the light changes on the water, waves skipping along to break on
the shore. It is to recognize the many sea-related industries, from
cosmetics to defence, that are economic engines, essential to
translation and technical writing, for Brest and for the region.
But to see translation and technical writing at sea is also to
recognize the winds of change - driven chiefly by AGI and LLMs - that
are currently buffeting the fields of translation and technical
writing. The changes that we are experiencing now compel us to
reconsider the place of translation/ technical writing in society
today, to consider the human and the environment amidst the changes
brought in via technology. We find ourselves making detours into other
related fields, even creating new fields, imagining new uses of
technology and perhaps even a new relationship between the sciences
and the humanities.
Keynote Speakers include:
Michael Cronin, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland
Rudy Loock, Université de Lille, France
Isabelle Poulin, Université de Bordeaux-Montaigne, France
Kristiina Taivalkoski-Shilov, University of Turku, Finland
We call on scholars in translation and technical writing to consider
submission. Please send in abstracts of 250-300 words with a brief bio
to tas at univ-brest.fr until March 10th 2026.
Notification of acceptance: April 2nd 2026
