Subject: Call for Expressions of Interest: MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowships Candidates ('Embodied Epistemicity')
Karolina Grzech and Sílvia Gabarró-López of the Department of
Translation and Language Sciences (DTCL), Universitat Pompeu Fabra
(Barcelona) invite applications from eligible candidates interested in
submitting a proposal to the Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions
Postdoctoral Fellowship scheme. Applicants with research interests in
epistemicity, gesture studies, sign language linguistics, or related
areas are particularly encouraged to apply.
--------------------------------------------------
About us
The project would be jointly supervised by Dr. Karolina Grzech and Dr.
Sílvia Gabarró-López.
Karolina Grzech is a tenure-track professor at DTCL and a member of
the Discourse and Translation Studies Research Group (GEDIT). She
specialises in language documentation, the analysis of spoken
interaction, and epistemicity—the linguistic domain concerned with how
knowledge is encoded, negotiated, and shared. Her early research
focused on evidentiality in Quechuan languages and on developing
methods for documenting and analysing the linguistic management of
knowledge in endangered and underdescribed languages. Building on this
work, her recent research has moved towards a broader theoretical
account of epistemicity in language. In collaboration with
international colleagues, she is currently developing a research
programme that moves beyond the study of specific epistemic forms
(such as evidential or egophoric marking) towards an examination of
how knowledge is constructed and negotiated in interaction. This work
adopts an onomasiological approach, starting from communicative
functions and comparing the diverse linguistic resources that
different languages use to realise them.
Sílvia Gabarró-López is a tenure-track professor and Beatriz Galindo
fellow at DTCL, and a member of the Formal Linguistics Research Group
(GLIF). She is an expert in sign language linguistics, with extensive
experience in discourse analysis, contrastive research, translation,
and interpreting between signed and spoken languages
Together, we offer complementary expertise in interactional
linguistics, epistemicity, and multimodal and signed communication. We
are particularly interested in working with researchers who wish to
investigate how epistemic meanings are expressed through embodied
practices accompanying spoken interaction, through sign languages, or
through comparative analyses of spoken and signed modalities. The
final shape of the project will depend to a substantial extent on the
interests, expertise, and prior experience of the successful
candidate.

What is a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowship?
The Marie Sklodowska-Curie Postdoctoral Fellowships (MSCA-PF) scheme
is a prestigious European funding programme that supports mobility,
career development, and training within and beyond Europe. The scheme
offers highly competitive salary and covers research costs.
The MSCA Postdoctoral Fellowship is based on a joint application
between the researcher and Universitat Pompeu Fabra to develop a
personalised research and training programme, to be carried out under
the supervision of Dr. Grzech and Dr. Gabarró-López. The scheme
supports researchers in gaining international, interdisciplinary, and
inter-sectoral experience and in strengthening their long-term career
prospects.
If successful, researchers will receive a 2-year full time employment
contract with Pompeu Fabra University as well as research funds
(24.000€).
--------------------------------------------------
Eligibility criteria
The fellowship is for a postdoctoral researcher (PhD at the time of
the call's deadline: 9/9/2026) who is in the first 8 years of her/his
postdoctoral experience (exceptions apply), moving to Barcelona from
another country. As a mandatory condition, if selected, the fellow
will have to live in Barcelona or its surrounding area during the
fellowship (except for research stays, attendance to conferences,
etc.).
Applicants from any country may apply, but they must not have resided
or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for
more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the call
deadline (9 September 2026).
Applications are encouraged from applicants with backgrounds in fields
relevant to research in the domains outlined above, including
pragmatics, interactional linguistics, gesture studies, sign language
linguistics, or a related field. Strong research skills, experience
with multimodal data collection and analysis, and knowledge of a sign
language will be valued positively.
--------------------------------------------------
Selection process
Applicants should check that they fulfil all the eligibility criteria
and then send an expression of interest consisting of a CV, a summary
presentation of the research proposal (c. 2 pages) and the contact
information of at least one referee.
Expressions of interest must be submitted by the 30th March 2026 by
email (karolina/dot/grzech/at/upf/dot/edu). The title of the e-mail
must be "MSCA application – Dr. Karolina Grzech– your name and
surname"
Proposals will be preselected on the basis of internal evaluation.
--------------------------------------------------
Support program
In addition to receiving feedback from the supervisors, candidates
selected to submit a proposal to the European Commission will receive
tailored support from a dedicated research advisor at UPF’s Research
Service, who will provide detailed feedback on the application. You
will also be invited to participate in an internal information session
offering practical guidance on the key dos and don’ts of the MSCA
Postdoctoral Fellowships.
