Requirements to learn more. This summer school will be of interest to
those in the fields of Historical Linguistics, Descriptive
Linguistics, Linguistic Anthropology, Palaeography, Religious Studies,
Buddhist Studies, (Asian) History, and Ancient Literature. The
instructors will include scholars both from Trinity College Dublin and
from other institutions around the world. As such, the school will
serve as a great opportunity to meet and connect with specialists in
the fields mentioned above.
Description:
The Summer School for Ancient Trans-Himalayan Languages (SSATH),
hosted by the Centre for Asian Studies at Trinity College Dublin, is a
two-week long summer school that features courses in ancient languages
and historical linguistics within the scope of the Trans-Himalayan
(Sino-Tibetan) family, and weekend workshops on two more languages.
This year, the courses will include: Old Tibetan, Reconstructing
Proto-(Western)-Kho-Bwa, Tangut, Yi Script, and Methods in Gyalrongic
and Tangut Historical Linguistics. These courses will run for ten days
over the course of two weeks. On both Saturdays, there will be
additional supplementary workshops on Old Meitei and Old Burmese.

Tuition Explanation: Tuition Fee for onsite students
Undergraduate, graduate, postgraduate students, TCD faculty, and those
outside of academia: No tuition fee
Part-time lecturers or research fellows: 150 Euro
Full-time lecturers or professors: 300 Euro
Tuition Fee for online students
400 Euro all languages (+ mini workshops). Discounts of 100 Euro or
250 Euro are available upon request. Check the application form for
more details.
Financial Aid Applications accepted until 10-May-2026
No financial aid in the format of money.
For onsite students, financial aid is given in the format of discount
in accommodation (upon requests in application form). accommodation
will be available for 845 EUR for 14 nights, from June 14th – June
28th (check out date) at Trinity Hall, Rathmines, Dublin 6. Discounts
of 240 or 425 EUR are available upon request.
For online students financial aid is given in the format of discount
in tuition fee (upon requests in application form).

Nathan Hill:
Nathan Hill holds a PhD in Tibetology from Harvard University and is
currently serving as the Head of School of the School of Speech,
Linguistic and Communication Sciences at TCD.
Joanna Bialek:
Joanna Bialek Ph.D. (2016) is Marie Skłodowska-Curie Postdoctoral
Research Fellow with the project ‘Tibetan Obsolete Mortuary practices
and afterlife Beliefs’ (TOMB) at Trinity College Dublin.
Timotheus Bodt:
Prof. Tim Bodt has recently been appointed as Associate Professor in
Asian Studies at the School of Linguistic, Speech and Communication
Sciences.
Kazue Iwasa:
Kazue Iwasa holds a PhD in Literature from Kobe City University of
Foreign Studies. She is Associate Professor at School of Foreign
Languages, Department of Chinese Studies, Nagoya University of Foreign
Studies.
Yunfan Lai:
Lai Yunfan is Nanyang Assistant Professor in the Division of
Linguistics & Multilingual Studies at Nanyang Technological
University, specialising in historical and typological linguistics of
the Sino-Tibetan family, particularly Gyalrongic languages.
Shuya Zhang:
Shuya Zhang holds a PhD from the National Institute for Oriental
Languages and Civilizations (INALCO), France, and is currently an
Associate Professor (tenure-track) at the School of Humanities,
Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
Yue Ji:
Yue Ji is a PhD candidate at the University of Vienna and a recipient
of a DOC Fellowship of the Austrian Academy of Sciences.
