Description:
General Description:
The Empirical Foundations of Linguistics (EFL) project is seeking to
hire a postdoctoral fellow to work within Workpackage 5 “Linguistic
diversity as a testing ground for theories of language”. Employment is
for 1 year renewable once, with a start date between September 1st and
December 1st, 2026.
EFL is an inIdEx project funded by Université Paris Cité within the
framework of its 2025-2030 programme. It coordinates the work of more
than 180 permanent researchers from 10 research units within
Université Paris Cité and other partner universities in the larger

Workpackage 5 is dedicated to exploring theoretical issues in
linguistics and cognitive science through the lens of linguistic
diversity, with an emphasis on evidence coming from languages or
aspects of language that are seldom taken into account in theoretical
work. Work is divided into 10 research projects addressing specific
research programs across many subdisciplines. See here for details:

Tasks:
The postdoc will conduct collaborative and/or independent research
within one of the 10 research projects of the Workpackage, in the
field of linguistics or psycholinguistics, leading to scientific
publications.
They will work under the supervision of a permanent member of the
project.
They will participate in collaborative activities within the project
as well as outreach activities.
Qualifications:
The postdoc will have in-depth expertise, as evidenced by a PhD and/or
authorship of scientific publications, in at least one of the
following areas:
 - Theoretical linguistics
 - Experimental linguistics
 - Quantitative corpus linguistics
 - Computational linguistics
 - Psycholinguistics
 - Cognitive science applied to language
  - Field linguistics
 - Descriptive linguistics
 - Linguistic typology
 - History and epistemology of linguistics
Good command of English in an academic setting (spoken and written) is
required. Knowledge of French is not required.
Candidates should hold a PhD in linguistics or a related field by July
15 2026. Candidates not holding a PhD at the time of application
should provide clear evidence that it is about to be granted.

Application Instructions:
Prospective candidates should prepare an individual project proposal
for 2 years that fits within the goals of one of the 10 research
projects within Workpackage 5, and seek the support of that project,
one of whose members will supervise their work.
Prospective candidates should:
 - By March 9: contact the coordinators of the supporting research
project to coordinate their individual project proposal with the
overall goals.
 - By March 16: send a declaration of intent (mentioning the title and
the supporting research project) to Olivier Bonami and Tatiana
Nikitina.
 - By April 15: send Olivier Bonami and Tatiana Nikitina the following
application documents:
   - a cv including a publication list and outlining training in
linguistics and related fields,
   - a 4 page project proposal (including references and appendices),
   - a cover letter explaining motivation and including links to 2
writing samples and the names of up to 3 referees.
Shortlisted candidates will be interviewed remotely in the first half
of May, with the intent of taking a final decision before June.
