VIII International Summer School Language Policy and Language Planning

Location: Siena, Italy

The University for Foreigners of Siena and the CLUSS Centre, in
collaboration with the CILS Centre (FAMI PROFT project) and the PhD
Program in Historical Linguistics, Educational Linguistics and Italian
Studies (Curriculum 1), will organize the 8th International Summer
School on “Language Policies and Language Planning – Language,
Identity, Vulnerability in Migration Contexts” from July 7 to 10,
2026. The topics of the Summer School will include:
- Representations, narratives, and discourses on migration;
- Construction and negotiation of hybrid identities in digital spaces;
- Reception practices for migrants in vulnerable contexts;
- Vulnerable individuals, access to services, and linguistic rights.
Quantitative and qualitative research methodology tools will be
provided in the fields of linguistics and language education,
sociolinguistics, and ethnography.
In addition, interested participants (teachers, PhD candidates,
postdoctoral fellows, researchers) will have the opportunity to
present their research, discuss collected data, and explore analytical
possibilities in thematic workshops with field experts and peers. The
intention to present one’s research is not mandatory for participation
in the Summer School and may be indicated in advance when completing
the registration form.

- Anna De Fina, Georgetown University
- Alison Phipps, University of Glasgow
There will also be presentations by:
- Maria Grazia Imperiale
- Fernanda Minuz
- Lorenzo Rocca
- Faculty members and researchers of the University for Foreigners of
Siena.
Course Languages:
The Summer School presentations will be held in English, with the
possibility of using multilingual PowerPoint presentations, etc., and
multilingual contributions are welcome.
Who Can Participate:
The Summer School is open to Master’s degree students, graduates, PhD
candidates, postdoc fellows, researchers, and teachers interested in
the above-mentioned disciplinary fields and topics.
When and Where:
The Summer School will take place in person at the University for
Foreigners of Siena from July 7 to 10, 2026.

Registration Fees:
- Master’s students, graduates, PhD candidates, postdoc fellows,
researchers, and teachers: €196.00 (including the €16.00 stamp duty
required for registration);
- Teachers and participants in the FAMI PROFT projects: free
registration;
- Students, PhD candidates, and staff of the University for Foreigners
of Siena: free registration (payment of the €16.00 stamp duties is
required for registration, except for PhD candidates for whom the
Summer School is part of the compulsory training program).
The International Summer School is part of Unistrasi’s offer for
teachers of Italian public schools within the framework of the “Carta
del Docente”. The SOFIA code to be used will be communicated when the
Summer School is activated.
For all categories of participants, those who wish to receive the
final certificate are required to pay €32.00 (corresponding to two
€16.00 stamp duties: one for the certificate request and one for its
issuance).
Please note that once the registration fee has been paid, it will not
be possible to request a refund in the event of non-participation.
The Summer School will be activated with a minimum of 20 participants.
Registration must be completed by filling out the Google form by April
15, 2026.
By the end of April, participants will be informed whether the
International Summer School has been activated. Registration will be
finalized upon payment, which must be made via PagoPA or bank transfer
by May 10, 2026 (bank details will be provided once the course is
confirmed).
