Job Location: Baden-Württemberg, Germany

Job Title: Postdoctoral Researcher
Job Rank: Post Doc
Salary: E13
Minimum Education: PhD
Specialty Areas: Typology
Other Specialties: Very good passive command of all three relevant
Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French)
Description:
The project "Global Basic Lexicon" (GloBasLex) is a research project
of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and Humanities within the
framework of the Academy Program of the German Federal and State
Governments. It aims to compile a 1,000-concept basic lexicon across
most of the world's languages for which dictionaries are available.
The data will be uniformly transcribed in IPA and enhanced by
morphological annotation. Accompanying research will focus on modeling
large-scale patterns in lexical typology and historical linguistics.
The data will be made publicly available to facilitate research in
comparative linguistics, language technology, anthropology and other
fields. GloBasLex is projected to run until 2040. For more
information, see the [initial version of the project
webpage.](https://uni-tuebingen.de/en/faculties/faculty-of-humanities/departments/modern-languages/department-of-linguistics/chairs/general-linguistics/projects/globaslex/)
For the GloBasLex project, the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences and
Humanities is seeking to fill the position of a
Postdoctoral Researcher (m/f/d) with a background in Linguistic
Typology (TV-L E13, 100% until end of 2029)
starting at the earliest possible date. The project is based at the
Linguistics Department of Tübingen University. The principal activity
of the postdoctoral researcher will be the coordination of data
collection work performed by a team of eight student assistants, which
involves interpreting descriptive grammars and dictionaries across
many language families, and participating in the editorial workflow
for about one third of the languages covered. These tasks will leave
room to pursue individual research agendas within the wider framework
of the project.
The ideal candidate has a proven track record in doing research
spanning several language families from one of the macroareas whose
languages are mostly documented in Romance languages: Mesoamerica,
South America, and West Africa. In order to be able to supervise the
work in all of these areas, very good passive command of all three
relevant Romance languages (Spanish, Portuguese, French) will be
necessary. Previous experience working with lexical databases and/or
statistical analyses of lexical data would be a plus.
The salary is figured according to the union contract named TV-L, E13,
depending on professional experience.
The period of employment is initially limited to the first funding
period, which ends on December 31, 2029. An extension to subsequent
periods is possible subject to continued funding.
Applications should include CV, an outline of research experience, as
well as names and addresses of up to three references. Applications
should be sent by email to the address below. The position will be
filled as soon as possible. Deadline for applications is January 31,
2026.
Disabled applicants will be preferred if they have the same
qualifications as non-disabled applicants. The Heidelberg Academy of
Sciences and Humanities strives to increase the proportion of women in
research, and therefore encourages qualified female scientists to
apply.
Please send your application electronically as a single pdf file to
as at semsprach.uni-tuebingen.de.
The contract will be made by the central administration of the
Academy.
Application Deadline: 31-Jan-2026
