Address forms are the set of expressions used by speakers to address
their interlocutor(s). These forms signal the social, cultural, and
relational norms that shape human interactions. They convey respect,
intimacy, or distance between interlocutors, and vary across languages
and cultures. The study of these forms allows for the identification
of social and linguistic dynamics, as well as of pragmatic and
linguistic variation in multilingual and intercultural contexts. This
conference aims to provide a space for academic reflection and
exchange on address forms across languages. The goal is to deepen our
understanding of the social, pragmatic, and linguistic variations of
these forms, from a multidisciplinary perspective encompassing
morphosyntax, historical linguistics, sociolinguistics, pragmatics,
discourse analysis, translation, didactics, and intercultural
communication.
During this colloquium, not only pronominal forms (e.g., you; tu and
vous in French) will be considered, but also nominal forms, such as
Sir, Madam, guys, friends, pal, etc., and verbal forms (i.e.,
grammatical inflections). We invite the scientific community to
participate by submitting a study on address forms in any language,
bearing in mind that particular attention will be paid to Spanish.
Presentations will be mainly in Spanish on May 20 and 21, and in
French and English on May 22 (Spanish-French whispered interpretation
service can be provided for free if requested). The conference
welcomes proposals for papers aligned with at least one of the
following thematic areas:
- Sociolinguistic and contextual variation in the use of address
forms showing proximity (T) and distance (V).
- Pragmatics and discourse analysis of address forms in context.
- Speakers’ ideologies regarding address forms.
- Historical and generational changes in the use of address forms.
- Diatopic variation: geographic differences in the use of address
forms.
- Interlinguistic comparison and intercultural issues: similarities
and variation between languages.
- Challenges related to the translation of address forms.
- Teaching address forms to native and non-native speakers.
Organization: Barbara De Cock and María Sampedro Mella – Université
catholique de Louvain.
