The fifth meeting on Sound Systems of Latin America (SSLA 5) will be
held at the Escuela Nacional de Antropología e Historia in Mexico
City, from May 20 to 22, 2026.

The objective of SSLA is to bring together an international group of
linguists to address theoretical and descriptive issues related to the
phonetics and phonology of minoritized languages in Latin America. We
aim to facilitate communication between researchers already working on
these topics, as well as to promote future research on the sound
systems of languages spoken in Latin America and the Caribbean.
The call for papers is open from the publication of this notice until
February 8, 2026. Proposals must include the following:
 - Title of the proposal
 - Abstract with a maximum length of two pages, single-spaced, in
12-point Times New Roman font, in Word (.doc/.docx) and PDF formats.
The maximum length includes examples, figures, and bibliography.
 - Submissions must be anonymized (no author data in the file) and
sent to spafmex at gmail.com with the subject line "Propuesta para
SSLA5". -The body of the email must include: full name, affiliation,
academic degree, and title of the presentation.
Presentations will be 20 minutes long followed by 10 minutes for
discussion, and may be delivered in English, Spanish, or Portuguese.

Publication of the call: January 8, 2026
Deadline for submission of proposals: February 8, 2026
Notification of acceptance: February 23, 2026
Program publication: April 1, 2026
Symposium dates: May 20, 21, and 22, 2026
Registration Fees:
Researchers: MX $500
Graduate Students: MX $350
Undergraduate Students: MX $200
Note: There will be a limited number of fee waiver scholarships for
speakers of minoritized languages and undergraduate students. An
explicit request must be included with your proposal submission.
