Northern Englishes is a series of workshops focused on dialects of
English associated with the linguistic ‘north’ of the UK. We are
delighted to announce that the 11th Northern Englishes Workshop
(NEW11) will take place in York from 9th-10th September 2026 at The
Guildhall, a stunning 15th century building right in the heart of York
city centre.
We are adopting a fairly loose definition of what constitutes
'northern Englishes': this includes everything from the North of
England and as far south as you can justify (though south of the
Severn–Wash line is probably pushing it!), as well as varieties spoken
in Scotland and Northern Ireland. We also welcome abstracts about
other varieties where the focus is on the ways the variety has been
shaped through contact with northern Englishes.
We welcome abstracts on any aspect of linguistic research concerned
with these varieties, whether that be dialectological,
sociolinguistic, historical, or whatever other subfield of linguistic
study takes your fancy. We welcome abstracts about ongoing work and
research in its early stages as well as more developed research.
Presentation slots will be 20 minutes for the talk (plus additional
time for questions and discussion).
Abstracts should be one single side of A4 (12-point font; additional
page allowed for references and/or figures), and should be submitted
in pdf format through the Oxford Abstracts submission system at the
following link: https://app.oxfordabstracts.com/stages/80783/submitter
The deadline for submitting abstracts is 27th March 2026.
We will send out notifications of acceptance around May 2026 and
registration will open shortly afterwards. The registration fee will
include lunch on both days of the workshop. There will be an optional
paid add-on to attend the conference dinner on the first evening. If
you require accommodation, this should be booked separately; there are
plenty of options in the city centre.
