Submission Deadline: 30-Jan-2026

We are pleased to circulate the Call for Papers for the 9th
Researching and Applying Metaphor (RaAM) specialised seminar Metaphor
in vitro. From texts to brains, which will be hosted by the University
School for Advanced Studies (IUSS) in Pavia on 16-17 June 2026,
organised by the Neurolinguistics and Experimental Pragmatics
Laboratory (NEPLab) and supported by the ERC project “PROcessing
MEtaphors: Neurochronometry, Acquisition and DEcay” (PROMENADE). The
seminar is organized in collaboration with the RaAM association and
with endorsement from Experimental Pragmatics in Italy (XPRAG.it).
The seminar will be devoted to showing the utility of combining and
blending different approaches to the study of metaphor, in particular
textual linguistics and corpus studies on the one hand, and
experimental investigations on the other. The seminar will foster
dialogue between metaphor research and a number of related
disciplines, such as psycholinguistics, neurolinguistics, language
acquisition, computational linguistics, and Experimental Pragmatics.
The event will preserve the diversity of topics that traditionally
characterizes RaAM events, while also promoting a wider range of
methodological approaches, from behavioral investigations to corpus
studies.
Invited speakers are: Hamad Al-Azary (Lawrence Technological
University) and Valentina Cuccio (University of Messina).
The seminar will be preceded on June 15 by four preconference
workshops focusing on different methodological approaches to metaphor:
Metaphor development (trends and tools), Computational approaches to
metaphors, The neurobiology of metaphor, Metaphors in clinical
contexts.
We invite proposals for full papers (15-minute presentation + 5
minutes for Q&A) and for posters on topics related to metaphor using a
variety of empirical methods, including but not limited to:
 - Metaphor processing;
 - Brain correlates of metaphor;
 - Metaphor skills in the lifespan, from development to aging;
 - Metaphor challenges across typical and atypical populations;
 - Modelling of metaphor (computational studies);
 - Metaphor types (textual analysis and corpus studies).
Submissions that promote the dialogue between traditional
textual/corpus linguistics approaches and experimental approaches are
particularly welcome.
We also invite the submission of posters detailing work-in-progress
and interim results.
Abstracts should be no longer than 500 words (excluding references).
They should clearly state the research question, material and methods
used, and (preliminary) results and their interpretation.
Abstracts should be submitted as anonymous pdf files via this portal:
https://raam2026.sciencesconf.org/
Deadline for submission of abstracts: January 30, 2026 (23:59:00
Central European Time)
Notification of acceptance: End of February (approximately)
