Overview:
The Linguistics, Semiotics, and Discourse Analysis Laboratory is
organizing the 14th Doctoral Symposium, to be held on April 23 and 24,
2026, at the Faculty of Letters and Humanities Ben M’Sick, Casablanca.
This symposium invites doctoral candidates in Linguistics, Semiotics,
Cinema, and Contemporary Arts from Moroccan and international
universities. It serves as a platform for presenting research in
theoretical and applied linguistics, semiotics, cinema, and visual
culture.
Symposium Scope:
The event encompasses research across the following domains:
- Linguistics: This track focuses on the structure of the Arabic
language from a comparative theoretical perspective, addressing
various levels of linguistic analysis (phonology, morphology,
lexicography, semantics, and syntax). It also covers grammatical and
morphological studies rooted in the classical tradition. Additionally,
the symposium welcomes inquiries into the sociolinguistic contexts of
Arabic usage and its contact with other languages.
- Semiotics: This track is dedicated to the study of signs and
symbols, examining how meaning is produced and interpreted across
diverse forms of human communication (literature, media, cinema,
advertising, anthropology, etc.). Papers should analyze linguistic and
non-linguistic signs—such as words, images, gestures, colors, and
cultural symbols—to decipher the connotations they carry within
specific social and cultural contexts. The objective is to uncover
latent meanings within the signifier-signified relationship and to
track semantic shifts across time, environments, and audiences.
- Cinema & Visual Arts: This track invites researchers specializing
in cinema and contemporary visual arts to address issues from
theoretical, analytical, or applied perspectives. It encourages
engagement with modern critical methodologies, including semiotics,
cultural analysis, visual studies, and intermediality.
