Can language revitalisation succeed without engaging with the
community of speakers or with those who live in the territory where an
Indigenous or minoritised language is spoken? What does it mean to
build and belong to a community in the digital age? Can communities
continue to exist and thrive despite the depopulation of rural,
mountain, and peripheral areas? Do communities sometimes work against
language revitalisation efforts? And what challenges does inclusion
present in creating a more equitable and just linguistic culture?
The aim of this two-day conference is to explore both the challenges
and the opportunities involved in engaging communities of speakers of
minoritised languages, as well as those who live in the places where
these languages are spoken, in the revitalisation, promotion, and
protection of linguistic heritage.
At the same time, the conference seeks to showcase the many
initiatives that already exist but often remain invisible because of
linguistic, institutional, and geographical barriers that limit their
circulation and public recognition. Shedding light on these
initiatives also means challenging narratives of inevitable language
loss and instead highlighting the vitality, creativity, and resilience
that already characterise these communities—often to a far greater
extent than is commonly assumed.
We welcome creative and interdisciplinary approaches to these
questions in order to better understand the fundamental role that
communities play in language revitalisation.
Submission Guidelines:
Submission deadline: 31 August 2026
Our aim is to provide a virtual space for interdisciplinary
collaboration and to strengthen connections between academic research
and grassroots language activism. We invite researchers, educators,
activists, artists, and students to submit contributions in one of the
following formats:
1. Presentation (15 minutes)
We welcome presentations of conventional academic papers, but we also
encourage interactive and creative formats. The conference will adopt
a flexible multilingual policy and actively promote
intercomprehension. However, at least one element of the
presentation—whether spoken or visual—must be in Italian, English, or
Spanish.
2. Workshop (30–45 minutes)
Workshops may focus on a practical aspect of language revitalisation
or language maintenance work and engage participants through
interactive activities that are accessible regardless of participants'
proficiency in the language concerned.
3. Video contribution (maximum 10 minutes)
Videos should be submitted in landscape format and are intended
exclusively for contributors who use a minoritised language in
artistic practice, including (but not limited to) visual arts,
theatre, and music.
Abstracts:
Submissions should include an abstract of no more than 400 words,
written in Italian, English, or Spanish. Contributors are also warmly
encouraged to include a (shorter) version of the abstract in a
minoritised language whenever possible.
Each submission should include:
 - the title of the presentation, workshop, or video;
 - presenter information, including:
 - name;
 - pronouns (optional);
 - email address;
 - academic and/or non-academic affiliation(s).
A bibliography is not required.
For group presentations, a single submission is sufficient, provided
it includes the details of all presenters.
Submission Process:
Please send submissions to info at devulgare.com no later than 31 August
2026.
You will receive an acknowledgement of receipt, and notification of
the outcome of your submission by 15 September 2026.
There is no registration fee for presenters.
Attendance:
In addition to presenters, the conference will be open to members of
DeVulgare who are registered for the 2026 membership year.
Those who are not yet members may join DeVulgare at the time of
conference registration by paying the annual membership fee (€15) plus
a €5 conference registration fee (total: €20).
Conference recordings will be available exclusively to registered
participants. Those who register through the dedicated registration
form will receive a Google Drive link to the recordings approximately
two weeks after the event.
