We cordially invite abstracts on topics related to Futures for
Gestures within the following thematic areas: “Theory, Practice,
Technology, Ecology” and their subthemes.
Theory:
- Mind, embodiment, and cognition
- Perception and social understanding
- Psychology and philosophy
- Meaning and multimodality
- Gesture studies theory
Practice:
- Knowledge, competence, and skill
- Habitualisation, routine, and culture
- Learning, pedagogy, and performance
- Interaction, conduct, and communication
- Intervention, impact, and profession
Technology:
- Artificial Intelligence, computer vision, and big data
- New, digital, and social media
- Screen, film, and cinema
- Kinematics and capture
- Human-Computer Interaction
Ecology:
- Organism, environment, and nature
- Vitality, life, and living
- Growth, movement, and process
- Relationality and materiality
- Dynamic and complex systems
We welcome all submissions that explore these themes and sub-themes.
Presentation Formats:
Paper presentation - 20 minutes & 5 minutes Q & A
Poster presentation - Print: Size: A0 (Width: 841mm x Height: 1189mm)
Thematic Panels - 90 min slot. Maximum 5 presentations + minimum 15
minutes discussion/ Q & A
Abstract Submission Guidelines for papers and posters:
Abstracts should be anonymous. Please delete all references to the
authors.
Each abstract should include the following:
a. Title (max: 15 words)
b. Abstract (max: 350 words excluding references)
c. Citation style: APA (7th edition)
Please submit your abstract online following this format.
For Thematic Panels:
Add the details of the panel chair as the submitting author and of all
the authors using the "Add Co-author" function. (Please indicate which
contributing authors are also panel co-chairs, if any).
Add a title line with the title of the panel under "Abstract Title".
Upload one document with all the abstracts including a 250-word
rationale for the panel + 150 words per paper (max. 5 papers).
Remember to delete all references to the authors.
Each presenter can appear on a maximum of three abstracts (whether
paper / poster presentation, panel) and only once as the first author
(excluding thematic panels).
Authors should ensure that the same abstract has not been presented at
another conference.
Deadline for submission: 30 November 2026, 11.59PM (Hong Kong Time)

Selection Process:
All submissions will undergo a double (or triple) blind review and the
first author of accepted submissions will be informed by the beginning
of April 2027.
The ISGS will offer a restricted number of bursaries to student
presenters, including PhD candidates, at the conference as a waiver of
the registration price. Information regarding the application process
will be provided following review of conference abstracts.
International Sign interpreting will be provided by Overseas
Interpreting. We will inquire about your requirements during
registration.
Pre-conference Workshops:
Pre-conference workshops are being organised and will take place the
day before the conference (December 13th 2027). More information will
be shared once available.
