As aging populations and multilingual societies continue to grow
worldwide (Navaneetham and Arunachalam 2025), communication involving
multilingual persons living with dementia has become an increasingly
important (Schneider Ward, Karl & Rzitki 2026; Schneider 2023; Karl
2021), yet still under-researched area.
We aim to bring together researchers working on multilingualism and
dementia across different linguistic, cultural, institutional, and
methodological contexts. We particularly welcome contributions that
investigate how multilingual repertoires are negotiated, maintained,
shifted, or reconfigured in interaction involving persons living with
dementia, caregivers, family members, clinicians, or institutional
staff. We are interested in how interactional practices may foster or
hinder participation, mutual understanding, and social inclusion in
multilingual dementia contexts.
Further, this panel seeks to build bridges between pragmatics and
neighboring disciplines such as sociolinguistics, discourse analysis,
interactional linguistics, conversation analysis, applied linguistics,
clinical linguistics, aging studies, dementia studies, and healthcare
communication. In doing so, it aims to contribute to ongoing
discussions on ethical and methodological challenges in research with
vulnerable populations, including questions of informed participation,
data transparency, multimodality, comparability, and person-centered
approaches to data collection and analysis.
We invite submissions that explore the intersection of multilingualism
and dementia interaction from pragmatic, interactional, and
discourse-oriented perspectives. Possible topics include, but are not
limited to:
 - multilingual interaction in dementia care settings (informal,
formal, institutionalized)
 - intercultural pragmatics and cross-linguistic perspectives
 - code-switching, translanguaging, and language choice in dementia
interaction
 - linguistic (a)symmetry, linguistic (in)equity
 - repair, alignment, stance, and participation
 - narrative, memory, and affect in multilingual interaction
 - interactional constructions of identity and personhood
 - caregiver–patient and family interaction
 - multimodal pragmatics and embodied interaction
 - ethical and methodological challenges in multilingual dementia
research
 - collaborative and interdisciplinary approaches to dementia
communication
We envision the panel as an interdisciplinary forum for exchange on
how pragmatic and interactional approaches can deepen our
understanding of multilingual dementia interaction and contribute to
more inclusive communicative practices in research and care contexts.
We warmly invite researchers from a range of disciplinary backgrounds
and career stages to submit their work and join us in advancing this
emerging area of research.
How to Submit:
Authors interested in contributing to the panel are warmly invited to
express their interest by contacting us with a brief description of
their proposed contribution.
We welcome abstracts of up to 500 words presenting (nearly) completed
research with a clear research question and, for empirical work, a
concise description of the data and approach. Please submit each
contribution separately through the IPrA2027 conference platform by 15
October 2026, midnight CEST. This also applies to invited
contributions. In step 4 (Topics), select this panel (Multilingualism
and Dementia in Interaction: Approaches to Communication, Care, and
Inclusion across languages). An active IPrA membership is required to
submit an abstract. Each person may be first author of only one
conference contribution, whether a panel paper, lecture, or poster.
