The aim of this panel is to bring together leading experts working on
the pragmatic study of language and politics. In particular, our goal
is to approach how cross-linguistic perspectives can promote deeper
understanding of politically relevant notions and actions, which may
be controversial outside of their immediate context. Such
controversies often turn out to be influenced by ethnocentric views:
it is often assumed that expressions (such as ‘nationalism’) and
speech acts (such as an Apology realised by politicians) have
universal meanings across linguacultures, whereas in real life they
often significantly vary due to their different historical
trajectories. This is why a cross-cultural comparative perspective may
provide an important tool through which language and politics can be
examined in a more objective way, as the organisers of the proposed
panel have also argued in a recent book (see House and Kadar 2025).
The present panel aims to provide a meeting point for experts to
promote research in this area.
The following colleagues have already confirmed interest in joining
the panel:

 - David Hazemali (University of Maribor)
 - Themis Kaniklidou (Hellenic American University)
 - Urszula Kizelbach (Adam Mickiewicz University)
 - Tomaz Onic (University of Maribor)
 - Laura Simoes (Hellenic American University)
 - Elda Weizman (Bar Ilan University)
In this panel, we will jointly explore possible future directions of
collaborative research. Such a collaboration may be particularly
important and timely in the context of current global crises. We also
hope to promote joint research between the participants of the
project, including young scholars, through a journal special issue.
The panel will feature Professor Zohar Kampf, a leading expert in the
field, as an invited Discussant. Professor Kampf will be asked not
only to comment on the contents of each paper but also to lead a
longer Discussion following all the presentations. In order to make
sure that sufficient time is available for this Discussion, we will
plan each contribution for 15 minutes, to be followed by a Q&A session
of 5 minutes.
