We are cordianlly inviting submissions for the panel outlined below.
Interested colleagues are kindly asked to contact Daniel Kadar and
send him their abstracts before 10/09/2026.
The aim of this panel is to bring together many different perspectives
on Chinese politeness and to explore directions for future research on
the basis of such perspectives. Since Gu’s (1990) seminal study,
Chinese has been an important language in politeness studies, with
hundreds of studies dedicated to its analysis. This popularity of
Chinese politeness naturally triggered many different views on Chinese
politeness phenomena, including for example diachronic approaches
(e.g. Pan and Kadar, 2010), cultural approaches (e.g. Chen, 2019),
metapragmatic analyses (Zhao, 2025), and intercultural takes (e.g.
Wang, 2017). Yet, little collaboration has taken place between experts
of these areas, so it can be said that Chinese politeness research is
typically conducted in ‘little bubbles’: scholars tend to be aware of
what others in the field are doing, but little attempt has been made
to synthesise our research results. The present panel aims to fill
this gap, by bringing together internationally leading experts in the
field.
Following this goal to create a collaboration between experts of
different areas of Chinese politeness, the panel will follow an
interactive format: all presentations will be planned for 15 minutes,
followed by a Discussion session of 5 minutes, and in the end of a
panel we aim to have a roundtable discussion. This discussion will be
led by Professors Shaojie Zhang, Dengshan Xia and Yansheng Mao, three
internationally leading experts of Chinese politeness studies. The aim
of this roundtable conversation is to explore ways in which we could
further the field, preferably as a collaborative effort between
experts of different areas of Chinese politeness research. We would
like to explore the following questions in particular:
 - Is it possible to identify areas of research which would benefit
from collaboration between seemingly distant areas, such as strictly
language-based approaches versus cultural approaches? What are these
areas?
 - How could we combine our research outcomes to better introduce
Chinese politeness for an international audience?
 - How could we create politeness-relevant open access corpora in an
era where corpora are increasingly important?
We hope to publish a selection of papers presented in this panel in
the form of a journal special issue, edited by the organisers of the
panel. We also hope that the panel will provide a meeting point for
China-based and international experts of Chinese politeness research.
