Job Location: Online
Job Title: Phonetic Transcriber (Remote, Contract)
Job Rank: Consultant

Specialty Areas: Phonetics; Phonology

Specialty Language(s): English (eng, stan1293)

Description:
We are looking for trained phoneticians (PhD students, postdocs, MA
candidates with strong IPA background) for paid, remote, part-time
work transcribing English audio of non-native speakers.
The task:
Each item is a short English audio clip (a few seconds), produced by
either a native or an L2 speaker. For each clip the annotator
provides:
1. A broad phonemic transcription in IPA, reflecting what is actually
heard rather than the orthographic target. Conventions follow a
simplified Oxford/OED style (e.g. /ə/ for STRUT and schwa, /ɑ/ for the
LOT/THOUGHT merger, vowel + /r/ for rhotic vowels).
2. Brief phonetic notes in square brackets where the broad
transcription hides a relevant detail: aspiration, taps/flaps, glottal
stops, dental or retracted consonants, syllabic consonants,
substitutions (e.g. [s] for expected [θ]), and other salient L2
realizations.
Requirements:
Confident command of IPA and comfort transcribing non-native speech
without normalizing to standard English forms. Familiarity with
pronunciation assessment or forced alignment is a plus.
Logistics:
Hourly paid, flexible hours. Annotators start with a short calibration
set - on passing, ongoing work is available.
To apply, email yrebryk at getfluently.app with:
1/ one or two sentences on your phonetics background
2/ how many hours per week you have
3/ your hourly rate
Full guidelines and the calibration link will be shared in reply.

Application Deadline: (Open until filled)
