Subject: Paid Speaker Recruitment: Female Speakers of Six Varieties of English


Hi! My name is Runyu Wu, and I am a PhD candidate at the Centre for
Language and Cognition Groningen (CLCG), University of Groningen.
My project investigates the intelligibility of different English
accents and whether different types of accent training can improve
intelligibility for learners of English. The study has received
ethical approval from the University of Groningen.
We are currently recruiting female speakers of the following varieties
of English:
Indian English
Australian English
New Zealand English
Glasgow English
Manchester English
Northern Irish English
Eligibility criteria
All participants should:
be female;
have no known speech or hearing difficulties;
have spent at least 12 years living in the relevant country or region
before the age of 18.
Additional criteria for each variety are provided below.
Indian English
You should:
have been born and raised in India;
have English as one of your first languages.
Speakers may come from any city or region in India.
Australian English
You should:
have grown up in Sydney.
New Zealand English
You should:
have grown up in any part of New Zealand outside Southland.
Glasgow English
You should:
have grown up in Glasgow.
Manchester English
You should:
have grown up in Manchester.
Northern Irish English
You should:
have grown up in Belfast, Lisburn, Armagh, Dungannon, or a nearby
Mid-Ulster area;
Recruitment process
The recruitment process consists of three paid stages.
Stage 1
You will complete a short background questionnaire and record three
short sentences. Ten speakers from each variety will take part in this
stage.
The task will take approximately 10 minutes, and you will receive £3.
Stage 2
Five speakers from each variety who complete Stage 1 will be invited
to record a one-minute reading passage.
The task will take approximately 10 minutes, and you will receive £3.
Stage 3
The Stage 2 recordings will be evaluated by raters familiar with the
relevant variety of English. One speaker from each variety whose
accent is judged to be representative will then be invited to complete
a final recording session lasting approximately one hour.
You will receive £20 for completing this stage.
For each stage in which you participate, you will be asked to provide
a personal email address so that I can send you a secure link for
uploading your recordings. Your email address will not be used for
data analysis and will be deleted after the recruitment process has
been completed.
You will need a Prolific account in order to receive payment. If you
do not already have an account, you will need to register with
Prolific before participating.
To ensure good recording quality, participants invited to Stage 2 or
Stage 3 will also need to install the free recording software
Audacity. Audacity is not required for Stage 1.
Because of the way Prolific handles targeted recruitment, I need to
add participants’ Prolific IDs to an allowlist before I can publish
the study for you. If you are interested in participating, please

study, answer any questions, help you register for Prolific if
necessary, and guide you through the participation process.
