Subject: Edited Volume - Drawing the Language Teacher: Visual Stories of Becoming and Unbecoming in ELT


Today, we're sharing our call for papers for an edited volume,
provisionally entitled "Drawing the Language Teacher: Visual Stories
of Becoming and Unbecoming in ELT", under consideration with
Multilingual Matters, as we have already been in touch with the series
editors who have expressed a great interest within.
The question this edited volume seeks responses to is: What does
becoming, and sometimes unbecoming, a language teacher actually look
like? Each chapter pairs one to three handmade or technology-assisted
original drawings or handmade artefacts with a short reflective
narrative theoretically grounded in a relevant concept from language
teacher identity, attrition, or teacher education. AI-generated images
are not expected, since an image produced from a prompt may not carry
(or at least we might not be able to measure the weight of each
prompt) the contributor's own hand and judgement, which is where the
volume's value lies.
To mention, the book has tentatively four parts:
Part I: Becoming, first shaping(s) of a professional self.
Part II: Unbecoming, attrition, loss, and drift.
Part III: Carrying, labour, care, and life alongside scholarship.
Part IV: Facing, relational portraits, in which teacher educators draw
the teachers they trained, and teachers draw those who taught them;
chapters here may be single- or jointly authored, and where an
identifiable third party appears, contributors will be asked to
anonymise details or obtain consent.
Prior to abstract submission, there is a short enquiry step. It helps
us understand who you are and where your story might sit in the book,
ahead of inviting a full abstract. This will allow us to check
disciplinary and regional balance before accepting contributors.

Contributors from English language teaching or applied linguistics,
whether as language teachers whose careers have moved into or
alongside academia, or as teacher educators reflecting on the road
that brought them there, are both welcome. Further information will be
shared with the possible contributors after the enquiry step soon.
