Commercial names are far more than marketing tools: they are condensed
narratives that communicate identity, values, memory, aspiration, and
cultural positioning in a highly compressed linguistic format . In
line with the congress theme “Names as condensed narratives,” this
session explores how brand names, product names, company names, and
other forms of commercial naming function as carriers of economic,
social, and cultural meaning across languages and societies.
The session welcomes presentations that examine commercial names from
linguistic, socio-onomastic, cultural, historical, legal, semiotic, or
digital perspectives. Possible topics include multilingual branding,
global versus local naming strategies, the role of commercial names in
identity construction, naming and consumer perception, renaming and
rebranding processes, trademark conflicts, and the increasing
influence of AI and digital platforms on naming practices. A special
focus may be on the crossing of commercial names across linguistic
borders, the adaptation of global brands in local markets, and the
relationship between commercial naming and cultural memory.
By bringing together scholars from different disciplinary and cultural
backgrounds, the session aims to highlight the importance of
commercial onomastics within contemporary name studies. Commercial
names provide a unique window into globalization, cultural exchange,
economic power, and changing communicative practices. At the same
time, they reveal how names operate as narrative devices that condense
stories about products, companies, consumers, and societies into
memorable linguistic forms.
The session invites both theoretical and empirical contributions and
encourages comparative and interdisciplinary approaches.
