Subject: Seminar on South Asian Syntax: In memory of Prof. Probal Dasgupta (1953-2026)
Research on South Asian Syntax is extensive, and yet many theoretical
questions remain unanswered, and many languages under/unexplored. This
one-day online seminar presents lectures on diverse topics from
category formation, causatives, nominalization, complementizers,
relative clauses to discourse. The topics represent the intricate
syntax of South Asian languages. They are also topics that Prof.
Probal Dasgupta had researched on during his lifetime, among many
other grammatical aspects. We organize the seminar in his memory.
Prof. Probal Dasgupta was Professor at the Indian Statistical
Institute, Kolkata. An eminent linguist, Probal's interests were
wide-ranging, covering morphology, syntax, sociolinguistics and
Esperanto. He was a prolific writer and leaves behind immense wealth
in the form of books and articles. We remember him for his scholarly
contributions, deep academic insights and for his kindness and
generosity for all, especially young scholars. Through these talks, we
revisit some topics that Probal thought are central to South Asian
Syntax.
