Abstract:

This book examines the rhetorical and linguistic practices in three
speeches by Christian orators against the Gentiles, with particular
emphasis on how corpus linguistics and computational methods can
enhance the analysis of Byzantine rhetorical discourse. While
traditional scholarship has largely relied on Aristotelian rhetorical
theory and close textual analysis, this work adopts an
interdisciplinary approach that integrates classical rhetoric with
digital humanities and corpus-based methodologies. The main objective
of this book is to identify and analyze recurring linguistic features,
including high-frequency lexical items, pronouns, adjectives, verbs,
lexical bundles, rhetorical structures, and intertextual references.
By compiling and comparing corpora of selected speeches, it
investigates how these linguistic elements contribute to the
construction of ideological meaning and rhetorical persuasion.
The analysis is guided by several research questions concerning
frequency patterns, rhetorical style, emotional tone, coherence
between rhetorical structures and ideological aims, and the role of
intertextuality in strengthening persuasive strategies. It also
explores how computational techniques can illuminate the relationship
between theology and public discourse, offering both quantitative and
qualitative insights. In addition, sentiment analysis was applied to
the corpus in order to examine evaluative language patterns and to
identify tonal variation across rhetorical contexts. The findings
suggest that corpus-based approaches provide a more systematic and
empirically grounded framework for rhetorical analysis, revealing
linguistic and functional patterns that may not be easily accessible
through traditional interpretative methods. Overall, this book
demonstrates how digital humanities, corpus linguistics, and sentiment
analysis can enrich the study of Byzantine rhetorical texts and deepen
our understanding of their ideological and communicative strategies.
