We are delighted to announce the International Joint Conference on
Language, Society, and Culture (JCo-LSC 2026), which will be held at
National Chiayi University in Chiayi, Taiwan, on September 12–13,
2026. Organized by the Department of Chinese Literature at National
Chiayi University, JCo-LSC 2026 aims to provide an interdisciplinary
forum for scholars, practitioners, teachers, and students to exchange
ideas, share preliminary results, and discuss research findings on all
aspects of language, society, and culture, as well as related fields,
in a warm and welcoming environment.
This year, JCo-LSC 2026 is co-organized in collaboration with the
Faculty of Linguistics at Kazimierz Wielki University (Poland), the
Language Teaching Center at National Formosa University (Taiwan), the
Department of Applied Chinese and the Graduate Institute of Teaching
Chinese as a Second Language at Wenzao Ursuline University of
Languages (Taiwan), and the Language Center at National Chiayi
University (Taiwan).
JCo-LSC 2026 will take place in Chiayi, Taiwan, offering participants
an inspiring setting where academic exchange is enriched by both
culture and landscape. Attendees will have the opportunity to
experience Chiayi, a welcoming city in southern Taiwan known for its
relaxed pace and convenient access to mountain scenery and tea-growing
regions. The conference also provides an opportunity to visit the
remarkable National Palace Museum Southern Branch, where world-class
collections of Chinese art and history are housed in a striking modern
architectural setting. Beyond the conference sessions, participants
can enjoy an environment that blends academic engagement with cultural
richness and local charm, making the experience both intellectually
stimulating and personally rewarding.
Conference Theme:
The theme of JCo-LSC 2026 is Linguistic Landscape: Theory and
Application. Linguistic landscapes serve both informational and
symbolic functions, reflecting the power dynamics and social status of
different linguistic communities within a given area. Beyond
documenting visible language use in public spaces, this approach has
developed into a highly interdisciplinary framework engaging with
affect, art, embodiment, borderscapes, urban life, education, ethnic
spaces, extreme environments, gender and sexuality, language learning,
language policy, linguistic awareness, rights and activism, minority
languages, memorialization, multilingualism, protest and dissent,
rural contexts, war-affected spaces, and (eco)tourism (see Blackwood,
Tufi, & Amos, 2024). Building on these developments, the conference
seeks to encourage emerging research directions that address
underexplored contexts and everyday spaces, highlighting how
linguistic landscape studies continue to evolve across regions and
disciplines.
Featured Keynote Speakers:
Mie Hiramoto
Professor Mie Hiramoto has accepted our invitation to serve as a
keynote speaker at JCo-LSC 2026. Her talk will explore the development
and application of linguistic landscape research in the study of
language, gender, and sexuality. Drawing on her extensive work in
sociolinguistics, Professor Hiramoto will demonstrate how linguistic
landscape methodologies can illuminate the ways gendered and sexual
identities are constructed, negotiated, and represented in public and
semi-public spaces. Her contribution will offer valuable theoretical
and methodological insights, further expanding the analytical
potential of linguistic landscape studies in contemporary
sociocultural research.
Chinfa Lien
Professor Chinfa Lien has agreed to serve as a keynote speaker for
JCo-LSC 2026. Professor Lien has long been dedicated to the fields of
Chinese dialectology, historical linguistics, Taiwanese language
studies, and language contact. His scholarship combines a profound
foundation in linguistic theory with a deep concern for local cultures
and communities. This keynote speech will focus on the
interrelationship among language, society, and culture, examining how
language functions as a carrier of historical memory, ethnic identity,
and cultural mobility. It will further explore how linguistic research
can respond to contemporary issues in multilingual societies,
including identity formation, language preservation, and cultural
heritage transmission. Drawing on his extensive and long-term research
on the languages of Taiwan, Professor Lien’s presentation is expected
to provide participants with valuable insights characterized by both
theoretical depth and a cross-cultural perspective.
Call for Papers:
We welcome submissions that engage with, but are not limited to, the
following themes: linguistic landscape theory and methodology;
multilingualism in public spaces; language policy and planning;
identity, gender, and sexuality in linguistic landscapes; minority and
endangered languages; urban and rural semiotics; digital and virtual
landscapes; tourism and commercial signage; memorial and historical
landscapes; protest, activism, and political discourse in public
spaces; and interdisciplinary approaches connecting linguistic
landscape studies with anthropology, sociology, education, cultural
studies, and media studies. We particularly encourage innovative and
context-sensitive research that expands the scope of linguistic
landscape studies into new empirical domains and theoretical
directions.
As JCo-LSC 2026 takes “Language, Society, and Culture” as its
overarching theme, we warmly welcome submissions that explore the
intersections of language use, social structures, and cultural
practices, even if they do not fall strictly within the narrower scope
of linguistic landscapes. In addition, studies related to Chinese
language teaching are also encouraged. Chinese language teaching
involves not only the transmission of linguistic knowledge, but also
issues of intercultural communication, identity construction, and
social interaction. Against the backdrop of the growing global use and
diversification of Chinese, research on Chinese language teaching can
likewise illuminate the dynamic relationships among language, society,
and culture, while addressing important issues such as cultural
exchange and educational practices in multilingual societies.
An author may submit a maximum of two abstracts, but only one may be
single-authored or first-authored. Accepted abstracts will be
scheduled for oral presentation. The official languages of the
conference are English and Chinese, and submissions may be made in
either language. Each presentation will be allocated 20 minutes,
followed by 5 minutes for questions and discussion and 5 minutes for
transition.
Abstracts of up to 350 words (excluding title and references) should
be submitted via kouhanako693200255 at gmail.com by July 15, 2026. All
submissions will undergo peer review by an international Scientific
Committee. Notification of acceptance will be sent via email by August
1, 2026. Participation in the conference is free of charge; however,
attendance at the gala dinner will be at the participant’s own
expense.
Publication:
Papers presented at this conference may be submitted, in accordance
with the submission guidelines of each journal, to academic journals
such as the NCYU Journal of Chinese Studies and the Wenzao Journal of
Applied Chinese, and may be considered for publication upon passing
the double-blind peer review process. Further details will be
announced during the conference.
