Journal: International Journal of Arabic Linguistics
Issue: Dictionary Use in Teaching/Learning Arabic as a First and
Second Language

The International Journal of Arabic Linguistics
(https://revues.imist.ma/index.php/IJAL/index) invites submissions for
a forthcoming special issue dedicated to the study of dictionary use
in the learning and teaching of Arabic as both a first language (L1)
and a second/foreign language (L2). This special issue seeks to bring
together innovative research that examines how learners, educators,
and researchers engage with lexicographic resources in diverse Arabic
learning contexts.
Dictionaries—whether print, digital, or corpus-based—remain essential
tools in language acquisition. However, their role in Arabic language
learning raises unique questions due to the language’s morphological
complexity, diglossic nature, and evolving digital ecosystem. This
special issue aims to explore these dynamics and contribute to a
deeper understanding of how dictionary use supports vocabulary
development, reading comprehension, writing, and communicative
competence.
We welcome original research articles, review papers, and case studies
in English, Arabic, or French on topics including, but not limited to,
the following:
1. Dictionary use and language acquisition
 - The impact of dictionary consultation on vocabulary acquisition in
Arabic
 - Strategies employed by L1 and L2 learners when using dictionaries
 - The relationship between dictionary use and communicative
competence
2. Digital lexicography and learning technologies
 - The role of mobile apps, online dictionaries, and AI-driven tools
in Arabic learning
 - User behavior and interaction with digital lexicographic platforms
 - Comparison between traditional and digital dictionary use
3. Pedagogical Integration
 - Incorporating dictionary skills into Arabic language curricula
 - Training learners on effective dictionary use
 - Teacher beliefs and practices regarding lexicographic tools
4. Challenges Specific to Arabic
 - Root-and-pattern morphology and its implications for dictionary use
 - Navigating diglossia: Modern Standard Arabic vs. dialects in
dictionaries
 - Issues of accessibility and usability in Arabic lexicographic
resources
5. Corpus-Based and Learner Dictionaries
 - Development and evaluation of learner-oriented Arabic dictionaries
 - Corpus-informed lexicography and its pedagogical applications
 - Frequency, collocation, and phraseology in Arabic dictionaries
6. Sociocultural and Cognitive Dimensions
 - Learner attitudes toward dictionary use
 - Learning culture and its influence on lexicographic practices
 - Cognitive processes involved in dictionary consultation
