Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics; Pragmatics; Semantics;
Syntax; Typology

Submission Deadline: 24-Jul-2026

This workshop is organized as part of the 49th Annual Conference of
the German Linguistic Society (DGfS 2027).
Workshop Description:
Information Structure (IS) is a broad domain of linguistic inquiry,
addressing how speakers organize and present information in discourse.
Crucially, languages employ a wide range of strategies across
(morpho)syntax, semantics, pragmatics, and prosody to package
information within discourse (Féry and Krifka, 2008; Féry and
Ishihara, 2016). Despite a substantial and growing body of research,
several fundamental questions remain open, for instance, the extent to
which IS (e.g., focus) is involved and interacts with syntax (e.g.,
movement), particularly in relation to fixed versus free word order
languages (e.g., Yoruba and Farsi, respectively); the possibility of
subsuming certain IS categories (e.g., topic and focus) under a single
analysis (e.g., alternative semantics or QUD approach); and the
development of a unified analysis for prosodic and morphosyntactic
focus marking languages (cf. Assmann et al., 2023). Such open issues
give rise to the need to investigate typologically diverse languages,
as such research allows scholars to test theoretical assumptions and
refine existing models of IS (e.g., Matthewson, 2025). The central
goal of this workshop is to challenge and refine existing IS theories
based on empirically understudied languages and phenomena.
We invite contributions from all areas of linguistics that bring new
empirical evidence to bear on IS issues such as the ones mentioned
above. We particularly welcome contributions that engage with
cross-linguistic data, investigate under-documented languages or
understudied phenomena, employ experimental, corpus-based, or
fieldwork-driven methods, and/or develop theoretical approaches
grounded in empirical findings.
Workshop Format:
20-minute presentations + 10 minutes for discussion, in English. Note
that speakers at DGfS 2027 may present in only one workshop, but may
be listed as co-authors on multiple presentations. Additional
