Website: https://www.gw.uni-jena.de/en/15955/jessie-2026

Dates: 31-Aug-2026 - 04-Sep-2026
Location: Jena, Germany

Minimum Education Level: BA in Indo-European studies or a related
field

Focus: JESSIE 2026 is designed for students and scholars of IE studies
and adjacent disciplines with special interest in phonology and the
latest developments in the field.
Special attention will be given to methodological aspects of
phonological – and especially prosodic – reconstruction as well as to
the information value of different types of source, ranging from
writing systems to metrical and prose texts.
Description:
The aim of the summer school is to provide students with a full-range,
typologically informed overview of phonological reconstruction,
integrating segmental, word, and phrase levels. Classes held by Martin
Joachim Kümmel (Jena), Ron Kim (Poznań), Cassandra Freiberg (Jena) and
Götz Keydana (Göttingen) will treat issues such as the reconstruction
of “laryngeals”, laryngeal feature contrasts in obstruents,
syllabification, the diachronic development of intonational contrasts,
the evolution of stress systems, and synchronic prosodic phrasing in
ancient Indo-European languages.
