Focus: The University of Naples «L’Orientale», in collaboration with
the Free University of Bozen-Bolzano, the University of Tuscia, and
Ethnorêma Association, is pleased to host the twelfth edition of
Language Documentation, which will take place in Naples from September
21 to 25, 2026. The Language Documentation Summer School 2026 (LDSS
2026) aims to provide participants with an introduction to the methods
and tools of linguistic fieldwork. In this edition, special attention
will be devoted to two African languages: Amazigh (Berber), an
Afro-Asiatic language, and Nara, a Northern East Sudanic language.
Description:
The programme of LDSS 2026 will cover the various methodological
aspects of language documentation, presented through concrete case
studies by specialists in the field. The lectures will include
discussions on the theory and practice of language documentation,
description, and revitalisation, also addressing ethical aspects of
language research and collaboration with local communities, as well as
the challenges a researcher may encounter and their possible
solutions.
Practical training sessions are planned, in which participants will
become familiar with the main tools used for data collection,
processing, and analysis. These sessions will also include the
participation of language consultants, native speakers of the two
languages under study. Students will thus have the opportunity to
become acquainted with the tools, practices, and methods illustrated
in the previous sessions.
