Description:
This is a month intensive summer school targeted at African linguists
and scholars. The goal is to equip native speakers linguists of
African languages with relevant skills set to benchmark and evaluate
state-of-the-art machine learning models. Since the summer school
assumes at least a bachelor degree background, participants are not
going to be introduced to introductory linguistics courses. Rather,
participants are going to leverage their linguistics skills in
transitioning to tech industry. Similarly, the summer school assumes
some level of computer training and access personal computer.
The summer school features only hands-on workshops. There are three
tracks for participants. The general track are courses for general
purposes. Phonology and syntax tracks target only people who are
interested in phonological and syntactic patterns of African
languages. Among all the tracks, participants are only allowed to
choose between either phonology and syntax plus the general track.
Finally, the summer school features two talks on ethics and industry
standard training on how to transition from theoretical linguistics
knowledge to tech roles.
In conclusion, apart from the classes, participants will be awarded a
certificate and a transcript.

Registration Instructions:
Participants are required to do at least 80% of the course
assignments/projects. Each participant will be working in groups.
Since the number of groups is pro-rated based on the number of the
total participants, participants are required to attend the first
introductory opening where the groupings and confirmation shall be
announced.
