The 58th Algonquian Conference will be held in St. John’s,
Newfoundland/Ktaqmkuk/Akami-assi at Memorial University, from Friday,
23 October to Sunday, 25 October, 2026.
This conference is an international meeting for Indigenous and
non-Indigenous scholars and community members to share research and
practice relating to Algonquian peoples, the largest First Peoples
group in Canada. Fields of interest include anthropology, archaeology,
art, biography, education, ethnography, ethnobotany, folklore,
geography, history, language education, linguistics, literature,
music, indigenous studies, political science, psychology, religion and
sociology.
This year we will host a Community Day, Thursday, 22 October, with a
sweat lodge ceremony, a movie night, and workshops in crafting,
drumming, and storytelling in partnership with First Light (the St.
John’s Native Friendship Centre). We will also be hosting an online
satellite event on Saturday, 17 October, to create space for those who
cannot travel to present their work in person during this time of
heightened travel costs. Regular conference sessions will take place
on Memorial University campus from the morning of Friday, 23 October,
to midday of Sunday, 25 October. Special workshops may be held
immediately after the conference.
The theme of the 58th Algonquian Conference is “Building Capacity,
Making Connections”, emphasizing the urgent importance of
strengthening networks among communities, educators, and researchers
to support linguistic and cultural reclamation, revitalization, and
documentation. Indigenous Language Revitalization (ILR)  and the
training of young leaders are primary foci for AC58.
We are grateful for the generous support of this conference by First
Light, the Department of Linguistics, the Faculty of Humanities and
Social Sciences, Memorial University, the Smallwood Foundation, and
Howl.
La 58e Conférence algonquienne se tiendra à St. John’s
(Terre-Neuve/Ktaqmkuk/Akami-assi), à l’Université Memorial, du
vendredi 23 au dimanche 25 octobre 2026.
Cette conférence est une rencontre internationale réunissant pour
partages les recherches et les pratiques relatives aux peuples
algonquiens, le plus grand groupe des Premières Nations au Canada, par
des membres de la communauté scolaire et des communautés autochtones.
Les domaines d’intérêt comprennent l’anthropologie, l’archéologie,
l’art, la biographie, l’éducation, l’ethnographie, l’ethnobotanique,
le folklore, la géographie, l’histoire, la didactique des langues, la
linguistique, la littérature, la musique, les études autochtones, les
sciences politiques, la psychologie, les religions et la sociologie.
Cette année, nous organiserons une Journée communautaire le jeudi 22
octobre, avec une cérémonie de hutte de sudation, une soirée cinéma et
des ateliers d’artisanat, de percussions et de contes, en partenariat
avec First Light (le Centre d’amitié autochtone St. John’s). Nous
organiserons également un événement satellite en ligne le samedi 17
octobre afin de permettre à ceux et celles qui ne peuvent se déplacer
de présenter leurs travaux en personne en raison de la hausse actuelle
des coûts de voyage. Les séances régulières de la conférence se
tiendront sur le campus de l’Université Memorial du vendredi 23
octobre au matin jusqu’au dimanche 25 octobre à midi. Des ateliers
spéciaux pourraient avoir lieu immédiatement après la conférence.
Le thème de la 58e Conférence algonquienne est « Renforcer les
capacités, créer des liens », soulignant l’importance cruciale de
consolider les réseaux entre les communautés, les éducateurs et les
chercheurs afin de soutenir la réappropriation, la revitalisation et
la documentation linguistiques et culturelles. La revitalisation des
langues autochtones et la formation des jeunes dirigeant.e.s sont au
cœur des préoccupations de la 58e Conférence algonquienne.

l'Université Memorial, la Fondation Smallwood et Howl pour leur
