GloSoc6 is the sixth edition of the conference series focusing on
mainstreaming lesser-known sociolinguistic research. It will take
place at the University of Verona, Italy, from 23 to 25 June 2027.This
edition’s theme is 'nonverbal communication in everyday interaction',
focusing on the body as a silent communicator.
While spoken language is commonly analysed linguistically, such
analyses capture only part of how people create and convey meaning.
Indeed, spoken communication relies heavily on gestures, facial
expressions, posture, prosody, and spatial behaviour. All of these
cues also play a crucial role in intercultural communication, where
expectations about eye contact, gesture, and interpersonal distance
differ widely. Miscommunication often arises not from limited
vocabulary or grammar, but from mismatched nonverbal norms.
By centring nonverbal communication, GloSoc6 encourages participants
to reconsider what “language” encompasses and to adopt a multimodal
view of how meaning is produced. Bringing together scholars from
sociolinguistics, linguistics, psychology, anthropology, and
interaction studies, the conference invites reflection on how embodied
behaviour and spoken language jointly create the communicative fabric
of social life.
Special attention will be paid to nonverbal cues in sign language.
Sign language users are expressly invited to submit a presentation.
One of the plenary speakers will be a signer.
