Special Qualifications: Open to those with relevant background and
interest in Cantonese Studies. As places are limited, applicants may
be selected based on their background and reasons for applying.
Participants with full attendance will receive a certificate of
participation.
Focus: Cantonese linguistics, language contact.
Description:
First launched in 2019, the School of Cantonese Studies aims to
introduce recent developments in Cantonese Studies, provide systematic
and rigorous research methodologies, and foster scholarly exchange
between speakers and participants. This year's theme is Language
Contact.
Sessions and Speakers:
Kam-Tai substratum in Cantonese — Prof. Chung Pui Tai & Dr. Hanbo Liao
Mutual influence between Cantonese and Standard Chinese — Prof.
Benjamin Ka-Yin Tsou
Cantonese in Southeast Asia — Dr. Wing Yu Hugo Tam
Contact between Japanese and Cantonese — Dr. Shin Kataoka & Ms. Cream
Lee
Chinese Pidgin English and Cantonese — Prof. Stephen Matthews
Contact between Yue, Hakka and Min — Prof. Bit-Chee Kwok
Two sessions per day (morning and afternoon), combining lectures and
workshops.
Medium of instruction is Cantonese, supplemented with English and
Putonghua.
Tuition: Free of charge
