The organizing committee of spraWIEN 3.0 invites students,
early-career researchers, and scholars from linguistics and related
disciplines to submit abstracts for the spraWIEN 2026 Conference,
taking place on 6 June 2026 at the Institute for Linguistics,
University of Vienna. (Note: Depending on the number of submissions,
the conference may be extended to 7 June 2026, if necessary.)
spraWIEN is a transdisciplinary conference that provides an open and
supportive platform for emerging researchers to present their work,
exchange ideas, and engage in interdisciplinary dialogue. The
conference aims to explore the role of language across disciplines,
methodologies, and social contexts, and to foster connections between
linguistic research and adjacent fields.
Conference Focus:
We welcome contributions that engage with language from a
transdisciplinary perspective. The conference deliberately follows no
fixed thematic focus; instead, it is conceived as an open forum that
encourages a broad range of perspectives on language and communication
across disciplines and methodological approaches. Possible topics
include, but are not limited to:
- Linguistic theory and empirical linguistics
- Applied linguistics and language education
- Discourse analysis, pragmatics, and conversation analysis
- Sociolinguistics, language variation, and multilingualism
- Language and society, ideology, and power
- Language in institutional, legal, medical, or asylum contexts
- Digital communication, media linguistics, and AI
- Corpus linguistics and quantitative approaches
- Interdisciplinary approaches to language (e.g. linguistics &
politics, technology, psychology, anthropology)
Submissions from adjacent disciplines that engage explicitly with
language or communication are very welcomed!
Submission Guidelines:
- Abstracts should be 300-400 words (excluding references).
- Submissions may be written in English or German.
- Abstracts should clearly state the research question, theoretical
background, methodology, and (expected) findings.
Both completed studies and work in progress are welcome.
Presentations are planned as 20-minute talks followed by a 10-minute
discussion.
Important Dates:
- Abstract submission deadline: 13 April 2026
- Conference date: 6 June 2026
Note: Depending on the number of submissions, the conference may be
extended to 7 June 2026, if necessary.
Who Can Submit?
spraWIEN particularly encourages submissions from:
- Bachelor’s and Master’s students
- PhD candidates
- Early-career researchers
The conference is designed as a low-threshold, supportive academic
environment, especially for first-time conference presenters.
Submission & Contact:
Please submit your abstract via mail to sprawien at sprawien.at
If you have any questions, feel free to contact the organizing team
via the same mail-address.
We look forward to your submissions and to welcoming you to spraWIEN
3.0 in Vienna!
