Description:
The Columbia School Linguistic Society (henceforth the Society) is
considering proposals for research funding for the coming 2026-2027
academic year. All applications will be considered for either a
research fellowship or a seed grant.
Funding is intended to support research studies that adhere to the
general characteristics of a Diverian Columbia School analysis. The
successful applicant will develop a linguistic research project that
addresses a grammatical, lexical, or phonological problem under the
guidance of a mentor who is a member of the Society. Grammatical and
lexical analysis will be moving toward an explicit signal-meaning
hypothesis: through their research, fellows will aim to identify and
describe the distribution of the hypothesized signal(s), and to
propose a meaning hypothesis with explicitly formulated links between
these patterns and the hypothesized meaning. Phonological analyses
explain the syntagmatic and paradigmatic distribution of phonological
units within signals, drawing on both communicative function and human
physiological and psychological characteristics.
Applicants whose proposals reflect a good understanding of Columbia
School (CS) theory and who have formulated a CS-based research
question, will be considered for a fellowship. Each new fellow will
receive a stipend for the period covering from September 1, 2026 to
August 31, 2027. Fellowship awards start at US$5,000 and are
calculated on the basis of a 12-month calendar year. Applicants who
are not eligible for a fellowship will be considered for a seed grant
if their proposals reflect strong academic potential, interest and
ability to learn about CS, and a commitment to explore a research
question through a CS lens. Seed grants start at $1,000 per year and
are calculated on the basis of a 12-month calendar year.
Assuming satisfactory progress in the judgment of the mentor and of
the Society’s Executive Committee, stipend payments will be made on a
quarterly basis by the Society.
Fellows and Seed Grantees Requirements:
- Attend an introductory course on CS linguistics that will be
offered for new fellows and seed grantees to further develop their
understanding of CS theory
- Commit to attending CS Seminars that take place about once each
month online
- Take the initiative to actively seek out the mentor during the time
of the award and to consult with the mentor on a regular basis on all
aspects of the project.
In addition to the requirements mentioned above, fellows are expected
to:
- Present ongoing work in proseminars that include the mentor and at
least two other invited Society members. Proseminar committees should
be formed in consultation with the mentor, and there should be at
least one proseminar each semester.
- Give a conference-style presentation (short presentation followed
by discussion) at one Seminar during the 2026-2027 academic year.
Dates will be selected at the beginning of the academic year.
- Work, during and/or after the fellowship period, to present the
results of the research at professional conferences and to publish
results in a recognized academic venue; publications resulting from
the fellowship should acknowledge the support of the Society and
copies should be sent to the Society’s program manager.
- Each fellow is expected to submit a report, in the form of either a
proposal for continued funding, or a final report at the conclusion of
the fellowship year.
- The fellow is also expected to be an active supporter of the Society
in activities pursuant to its mission. Fellows may also be asked to
make service contributions.
Application Deadline: 31-May-2026
Application Instructions:
The application consists of:
- Proposal statement (please see below)
- The applicant’s CV
- If you have a CS mentor, they should review your application prior
to submission
- A statement regarding your current position(s) and how this
fellowship will advance your
professional plans
Proposal statements should not exceed 10 double-spaced pages written
in 12-point font, and
should consist of several sections:
A research proposal describing the analytical problem to be addressed
as well as previous
treatments in the literature, and offering details of any progress the
analyst has made. Mentors
should review applications prior to submission.
All successful proposals will show that the project falls within the
general characteristics of a CS
analysis that addresses observable facts of distribution.
