Abstract:
This volume brings together Gregerson’s fieldwork in Vietnam’s Kontum
Province (1968–1974), conducted in collaboration with Rengao speakers
Paul Hyum and Andre Ir. The outcome is a sketch grammar, a dictionary
of more than 6,000 entries, and a rich collection of texts. Rengao, a
North Bahnaric language within the Austroasiatic phylum, stands out
for its typologically rare tense–lax phonological contrast—still of
uncertain origin—and for its remarkably vivid “expressive” lexicon of
onomatopoeic, ideophonic, and phonaesthemic forms, all central to the
community’s vibrant oral traditions. The work also offers substantial
insights into processes of grammaticalization, borrowing, and
etymology.
Readership: This volume will be of particular interest to linguists
and students of linguistics working in typology and Southeast Asian
languages—both internationally and within Vietnam—as well as to Bible
translators and students of translation engaged with the languages of
the region.
