Subject: The I-LanD Seminar Series - 4th Edition (2nd Semester): Fourth Seminar

The I-LanD Research Centre (https://i-land-researchcentre.eu/) is
pleased to announce the fourth seminar in the I-LanD Seminar Series -
4th Edition (2nd semester).
Innovative in format and interdisciplinary in scope, the I-LanD
Seminar Series brings together scholars to discuss key issues in their
fields of expertise, with particular attention to theoretical
perspectives, methodological approaches, research challenges, and
emerging directions of inquiry. Each seminar opens with a brief
introduction to the topic, followed by short presentations by invited
speakers, a roundtable discussion among the panellists, and a Q&A
session with the audience.
The fourth seminar, entitled "Naming and Identity Across Languages and
Cultures: Transdisciplinary Perspectives", will take place on
Thursday, 14 May 2026, via Microsoft Teams, from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30
p.m. (CET).
The seminar will explore how names are key to the construction and
representation of individual and collective identity. Bringing
together scholars from different disciplinary backgrounds, ranging
from onomastics to sociolinguistics and geography, the discussion will
focus on naming practices as forms of decolonial resistance, gender
performativity, cultural and linguistic reappropriation, and literary
characterization and interpretation. By fostering transdisciplinary
contamination, the seminar will examine not only how personal names,
placenames, fictional names, and brand names denote identity, but also
how they turn into socially embedded acts that are discursively
performed across cultural communities, language varieties, and textual
and media genres.
Speakers:
Lawrence D. Berg (University of British Columbia)
Luisa Caiazzo (University of Basilicata)
Richard Coates (University of the West of England)
Sheila Embleton (York University)
In conversation with:
Mirko Casagranda (University of Calabria)
Microsoft Teams | 4:30–6:30 p.m. (CET)
Passcode: Pi3Y7bt2
