Submission Deadline: 13-Jun-2026

We invite submissions for the workshop Theoretical Linguistics at
School, which aims to promote the integration of theoretical
linguistics into secondary education.
In the Netherlands, upcoming curriculum reforms for Dutch and modern
foreign languages (SLO 2024/2025) mark a significant paradigm shift.
Traditionally, these subjects have focused primarily on language
proficiency, with limited attention to linguistic reasoning. The new
learning objectives explicitly include “considering form and meaning”
as a core goal, thereby creating new opportunities for integrating
insights from theoretical linguistics into the classroom.
However, implementing this shift is not straightforward. There is
little established tradition connecting formal linguistics with
secondary education, and many theoretical linguists are unfamiliar
with how their work can be translated into pedagogical practice or
disseminated to teachers. At the same time, there is clear interest
and willingness within the field to engage with this development.
Good practices can be found: the shift in language subjects in the
Netherlands results from a substantive body of research in subject
pedagogy and it is embedded in a paradigm shift that is also taking
place elsewhere in Europe. Illustrative of this is the publication of
the anthology "Formal Linguistics and Language Education," edited by
Andreas Trotzke and Tanja Kupisch in 2020, and the launch of the
journal Pedagogical Linguistics in the same year. This journal focuses
on the didactic application of theoretical and descriptive
linguistics. Another example can be found in the United Kingdom, where
the project "Linguistics in Modern Foreign Languages" focuses on the
integration of linguistics in secondary education (Sheehan 2024).
During the workshop we aim to bring together the expertise of such
international colleagues to establish a current-state-of-the-art and
to model good practices for theoretical linguists.
This workshop aims to:
 - introduce theoretical linguists to relevant curricular and
subject-pedagogical frameworks,
 - showcase successful collaborations between linguists and educators,
 - stimulate the shift that is taking place in the Netherlands by
welcoming local contributions as well as to highlight international
best practices in pedagogical linguistics,
 - and foster new partnerships between theoretical linguists and
subject-pedagogy researchers.
By bringing together theoretical linguists and showcasing
international expertise, the workshop seeks to make the current state
of the art in pedagogical linguistics more visible and to strengthen
this emerging field in the Netherlands and across Europe.
The workshop will feature invited talks by international experts
working at the interface of theoretical linguistics and education, as
well as contributed presentations.
Invited Speakers:
 - Sandra Döring
 - Jimmy van Rijt
 - Andreas Trotzke
We particularly encourage submissions from linguists (including junior
researchers) who are interested in:
 - applying linguistic theory in educational contexts,
 - developing teaching materials grounded in linguistic analysis,
 - collaborating with educators or curriculum developers,
 - or reflecting on the role of linguistic reasoning in secondary
education.
Submission Details:
We invite abstracts for contributed talks. Junior researchers are
especially encouraged to apply; two slots in the program will be
reserved for junior researchers.
Submission deadline: June 13, 2026
Notification of acceptance: July 2026
Abstract should be sent to m.n.r.debelder at uu.nl and
j.m.vankoppen at uu.nl
Instructions for Submission:
 - Abstracts must be in PDF format.
 - Abstracts must not exceed two pages of A4 paper, including figures
and references.
 - Abstracts should have 2.5 cm margins on all sides, set in Times New
Roman no smaller than 12 points.
