Los invitamos a enviarnos sus resúmenes para presentaciones (20 min +
10 para preguntas) o carteles para la octava edición de FAMLi, que se
celebrará en el Centro Estatal de Lenguas, Arte y Literatura Indígenas
(CELALI) en San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas del 9 al 11 de
diciembre de 2026.
El objetivo de FAMLi es reunir a lingüistas para compartir
investigaciones sobre los idiomas Mayas contemporáneos y abordar temas
nuevos y destacados en el campo. Invitamos la participación de
investigadores que trabajan en cualquier corriente lingüística,
incluyendo a estudiantes Mayas cuyo enfoque es cualquiera de las
lenguas de la familia. También consideraremos trabajos sobre otros
idiomas indígenas que han estado en contacto cercano con los idiomas
Mayas y que han influido en su estructura gramatical y desarrollo
histórico.
Este año, FAMLi tendrá una sesión especial sobre la animacidad en la
gramática. Esta sesión busca reunir investigaciones sobre cómo la
animacidad influye en distintos aspectos de la gramática de las
lenguas Mayas, incluyendo la marcación de persona y número, el
alineamiento, la estructura argumental, la definitud, la referencia,
la voz, la jerarquía de persona y otros fenómenos morfosintácticos y
semánticos. Resúmenes sobre este tema serán considerados con
prioridad, pero aceptamos resúmenes sobre cualquier tema pertinente a
los idiomas Mayas. Los participantes de esta sesión serán invitados a
mandar una versión desarrollada de su trabajo para un número temático
arbitrado de la revista Language Documentation & Conservation dedicado
a la animacidad en los idiomas Mayas. Las contribuciones podrán
enviarse en español o en inglés.
El 11 de diciembre habrá un taller especial sobre traducción e
interpretación en idiomas Mayas. Este taller reunirá a traductores,
intérpretes, estudiantes y especialistas para dialogar sobre los retos
lingüísticos, culturales y políticos de la traducción y la
interpretación en contextos comunitarios, educativos, jurídicos y
académicos. El taller incluirá espacios de discusión y actividades
colaborativas.
Las presentaciones y los carteles deben incorporar un análisis sobre
cualquier área de la lingüística Maya: fonética/fonología, morfología,
sintaxis, semántica/pragmática, lingüística histórica, adquisición del
lenguaje, antropología lingüística y psicolingüística. Las
presentaciones pueden ser en español, inglés, o idiomas Mayas.
Resúmenes:
Los resúmenes deben ser anónimos y tener un máximo de 500 palabras (en
inglés o en español) en una página con márgenes de una pulgada, en
Times New Roman, 12 puntos, con espaciado simple. Bibliografía y datos
pueden incluirse en una página separada y no cuentan dentro del
parámetro de 500 palabras.  Los resúmenes deben enviarse como un
archivo PDF a famli.ocho.2026 at gmail.com antes del 23 de julio del 2026
a 11:59 pm, Pacific Standard Time (PST).

We invite you to submit abstracts for presentations (20 min + 10 min
for questions) or posters for the eighth edition of FAMLi, to be held
at the Centro Estatal de Lenguas, Arte y Literatura Indígenas (CELALI)
in San Cristóbal de las Casas, Chiapas from December 9–11, 2026.
The aim of FAMLi is to bring together linguists to present research on
contemporary Mayan languages and tackle new and outstanding puzzles in
the field. FAMLi encourages participation from researchers working in
any linguistic framework to present data and analyses of Mayan
languages, including Mayan students working on their own or other
languages of the family. We also welcome submissions on other
Indigenous languages that have been in close contact with Mayan
languages and that have influenced their grammatical structure and
historical development.
This year, FAMLi will include a special session on animacy in grammar.
This session aims to bring together research on how animacy influences
different aspects of the grammar of Mayan languages, including person
and number marking, alignment, argument structure, definiteness,
reference, voice, person hierarchy effects, and other morphosyntactic
and semantic phenomena. Abstracts on this topic will be given priority
consideration, although abstracts on any topic relevant to Mayan
languages are welcome. Participants in this special session will be
invited to submit an expanded version of their work to a special
peer-reviewed issue of Language Documentation & Conservation devoted
to animacy in Mayan languages. Submissions may be in either English or
Spanish.
On December 11, there will also be a special workshop on translation
and interpretation in Mayan languages. This workshop will bring
together translators, interpreters, students, and researchers to
discuss the linguistic, cultural, and political challenges of
translation and interpretation in community, educational, legal, and
academic contexts. The workshop will include discussion spaces and
collaborative activities.
Presentations and posters should incorporate an analysis related to
any subfield of Mayan linguistics: phonetics/phonology, morphology,
syntax, semantics/pragmatics, historical linguistics, language
acquisition, linguistic anthropology, and psycholinguistics.
Presentations can be in Spanish, English, or Mayan languages.
Abstracts:
Abstracts should be anonymized and a maximum of 500 words (Spanish or
English) on one page with one-inch margins, in Times New Roman, 12
pt., single spaced. References and data may be included on a second
page and do not count toward the word count. Abstracts should be
submitted as a PDF file to famli.ocho.2026 at gmail.com by July 23rd,
2026 at 11:59 pm Pacific Standard Time (PST).
