Description:
Tsuda University, a four-year women’s liberal arts university in
Tokyo, Japan, announces the following opening:
Position:
Associate Professor (junkyōju) or Assistant Professor (sennin kōshi)
in Japanese Linguistics (with tenure)
Courses to be Taught:
1) Seminars on Linguistics in the Department of English, as well as in
Linguistics in the Graduate Program in English and Cultural Studies
2) Lectures on Japanese Linguistics (“Comparative Study of Japanese
and English,” “Survey of the Japanese Language,” “Special Studies in
the Japanese Language 1,” etc.)
3) EFL courses in undergraduate programs
Starting Date: April 1, 2027
Qualifications:
1) Field of specialization: Linguistics. Applicants must focus
primarily on the Japanese language and be capable of collecting and
analyzing empirical data through methods such as fieldwork, corpus
analysis, and experimental research.
2) Research achievements in fields or topics such as “Japanese as a
second language,” “heritage language studies,” “language contact,” or
“Japanese language pedagogy” are desirable.
3) Applicants must hold a Ph.D. in the above field of specialization,
or be expected to obtain one by the date of appointment.
4) Applicants must have multiple research achievements in English
(journal articles, books, conference presentations, etc.) in their
area of specialization.
5) Applicants must have advanced proficiency in English.
6) Applicants must have advanced proficiency in Japanese sufficient to
carry out their duties without difficulty.
7) Applicants must understand the founding spirit of the university
and be willing to contribute actively to undergraduate
English-language education as well as to the training of researchers
at the graduate level.
8) In addition to duties within the department and graduate school,
applicants must be willing to contribute actively to university-wide
committees, entrance examinations, and other institutional
responsibilities.

1) Curriculum vitae (any format; include teaching experience and
courses taught)
2) List of research achievements (clearly indicate whether each work
was peer-reviewed; list all
scholarly works and mark your three major publications)
3) Three major publications (including at least one article written in
English)
*If books or other materials cannot be submitted via Google Form,
please send physical copies separately by mail.
4) Summary of the three major publications (for each publication:
approximately 500 words in English and 800 characters in Japanese)
5) Future research plan (approximately 500 words in English)
6) Statement of Teaching Philosophy and aspirations at the Department
of English, Tsuda University (approximately 800 characters in
Japanese)
7) Proof of highest academic degree (copy of diploma, degree
certificate, official transcript, etc.)

Selection Process:
First Screening: Document review (Shortlisted applicants will be
notified by mid-July, 2026)
Second Screening: Interview and mock teaching session (Scheduled for
early September, 2026)
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit two letters of
recommendation in advance. In principle, the second screening will be
conducted at our Kodaira Campus. Transportation expenses are to be
borne by the applicant. However, depending on circumstances, the
interview may be conducted online. Final results will be notified
directly to applicants after the final candidate has been selected.
Employment Conditions:
1) Working hours: Estimated at 7 hours a day, under the category of
Discretionary Labor System for Professional Work. Instructors of the
graduate-level omnibus course Topics in Language Teaching may be
required to hold classes during weekday evening hours.
2) Salary: Based on the salary of national civil servants.
3) Days off: Saturdays, Sundays, Public Holidays, and Days Designated
by the University. However, employees may be required to work on
holidays for classes, entrance exams, and other reasons.
4) Retirement Age: 68
5) Insurance: Employees will be enrolled in the Japan Private Schools
Promotion and Mutual Aid
Association, as well as employment insurance and workers’ accident
compensation insurance.
