EDIMA, the IMA’s School of Didactics, is an initiative launched in
2023 by Arabic Language and Civilization Centre [CLCA] of Institut du
Monde Arabe [IMA]. It gathers international figures in the teaching of
Arabic as a foreign language. One of EDIMA’s long-term objectives is
to create and maintain an international network of Arabic language
teaching experts – researchers and field practitioners.
For its 4th edition, to be held in the autumn of 2026, EDIMA aims to
explore the training of teachers-trainers.
The question of the pedagogical and didactic quality of Arabic
language teaching has become crucial in any reflection on the
challenges and issues surrounding the transmission of this language.
The high-quality training of teachers-trainers responsible for this
transmission lies at the heart of the matter.
This call for contributions invites experts and practitioners to
explore three major themes related to the training of trainers. The
aim is to propose contributions that examine the core competencies of
our profession and the evolution of our field in response to a variety
of new challenges. Reflection will focus on the posture, role, and
skills of the trainer as a key actor, as well as on the content and
modalities of the curriculum to be developed for such training. We
also seek to examine the specific factors that must be considered when
identifying the needs of trainers in training, the particularities of
each teaching context/environment, and finally those related to the
learner audience (adults vs. young learners).
We encourage proposals that combine theoretical reflection with
practical solutions to sustainably transform the transmission of the
Arabic language and the support provided to learners.
Note: The selected practical contributions will be implemented in
workshops or dedicated conferences during the autumn school.
This 4th edition of the Autumn School will be organized around the
following themes:
Theme 1: Define the trainer’s competencies
What are the core competencies required of Arabic language teachers in
terms of linguistic, cultural, didactic, and psycho-pedagogical
expertise? Are there existing competency frameworks that define these
skills? Are there benchmark experiences or reference models in teacher
training, both in France and internationally? This section will also
examine the nature of the institutions responsible for certifying and
guaranteeing the quality of such training.
Theme 2: Integrating Dialect into Arabic Language Teaching
Beyond the theoretical framework that has progressively developed
through the integrated approach initiated by Mahmoud Al-Batal’s
Al-Kitaab method, we seek to explore concrete classroom practices and
the nature of the Arabic language within such an approach.
Theme 3: Pedagogical Engineering for Arabic for Specific Purposes
(ASP) Programs
This theme invites reflection on Arabic for Specific Purposes by
examining needs analysis and the design of appropriate course content
through practical case studies (diplomatic Arabic, medical Arabic,
finance, new technologies, etc.).
Theme 4: Arabic for Young Learners
We seek to reflect on the training of teachers working with young
learners, particularly those teaching very young children. What
additional training do they require—not only in pedagogy, but also in
language didactics? What kinds of teaching materials and resources do
they need?
