Abstract:

The compendium, entitled The Confluence of Multiculturalism and
Knowledge Systems: Perspectives in Language and Literature, is the
outcome of an initiative by the Department of English Language and
Literature of Faculty of Arts, Letters and Social Sciences at the
University of Maroua. This collection explores the relationship
between multiculturalism and knowledge systems from both linguistic
and literary perspectives. The individual papers address various
aspects of language (such as language endangerment, lexicology,
rhetoric, phonology and pragmatics) as well as key literary themes.
The volume comprise twelve papers divided into two parts, which
examine multiculturalism and knowledge systems from two broad
perspectives. Part One focuses on language in multicultural contexts,
including the fate of less endangered languages, rhetorical structures
and techniques in sermons, differences in sound productions, New
Englishes, the language use of petty traders, translanguaging
practices, English requests produced by non-native speakers, and the
use of oppressive language in Cameroonian literary texts. Part Two
offers a literary portrayal of the confluence of multicultural
contexts and knowledge systems, addressing issues such as the
post-apartheid public sphere, (in)transigency to cultural evolution,
the burden of race in settler discourse, epistemological
(de)colonisation, inclusive epistemologies, and education and
intellectual idealism.
