Abstract:

Weinig is bekend over sommige grammaticale constructies in het
Nederlands van de 15e, 16e en 17e eeuw die nu in onbruik zijn. Eén
ervan is de indertijd niet-frequente en vermoedelijk alleen
schriftelijk voorkomende combinatie van mits met een onvoltooid
deelwoord (pp): mits.pp. Teksten met mits.pp zijn niet altijd
makkelijk te begrijpen, mede omdat mits in die tijd meerdere
betekenissen had, en voorzetsel én voegwoord was: causaal,
instrumenteel, begeleidend (‘met’), conditioneel.
Verwarring is dus begrijpelijk, bijv. over mits.pp in het blijspel
Warenar. Wanneer Geertruyd haar broer Rijckert adviseert om in verband
met zijn enorme bezit een vrouw te zoeken, geeft Rijckert voor het
moment aan haar toe met de woorden:
Wel ick ben te vreen, doetme morghen een Bruydt op;
Mits bevoorwarend’ dat ickse overmorgen ’tgat uyt schop!
Betekent mits.pp in regel 2 dat Rijckert zélf de voorwaarde uitvoert
die hij verbindt aan een huwelijk, nl. het daags erna wegsturen van de
bruid?  Dan drukt bevoorwarend’ de conditie uit en is mits
tautologisch. Of geeft Rijckert zijn zus haar zin op voorwaarde dat
(mits) zíj ‘bij contract regelt’ (bevoorwarend’) dat de vrouw de dag
na het huwelijk het pand verlaat? Deze en dergelijke vragen komen aan
bod in dit proefschrift en het corpus mits.pp met 300
gecontextualiseerde mits.pp-fragmenten (1450-1700).
Dit boek vertrekt bij de diachrone constructiegrammatica en de
mits-analyse van Daalder. Het combineert filologie en
tekstinterpretatie met kwantitatief geïllustreerde corpusanalyse en
diachrone schema’s. Het laat in gebruiksgevallen van mits.pp kleine
stappen zien in de geschiedenis van een voegwoord, mits.
