Description:

Title: PhD research assistantship (expressions of interest): History
of Western Philosophy of Language (HOWPOL), Western University
Professors Benjamin Hill and Robert Stainton (Western University,
London, Ontario, Canada) are seeking a PhD student interested in the
history of Western philosophy of language to join their HOWPOL
research project. This is a call for expressions of interest, not a
formal application.
HOWPOL looks beyond the usual Frege–Russell starting point to more
than two thousand years of philosophical work on varieties of meaning,
the relations among mind, language and world, and the nature of
meanings. The planned work includes journal articles on early modern
philosophy of language and two books on the history of the field.
If our SSHRC Insight Grant application is funded (decision expected
spring 2027), one admitted PhD student would hold a research
assistantship on the project, on top of Western’s standard graduate
funding. Admission to the PhD program is decided separately through
the department’s regular process (applications close 7 January 2027).
Candidates are encouraged to write to us before applying.
